That's my understanding, too, Larc. I opted to add "RP" to my Production partition so I could test the final Builds. So far, everything's good.

Although I'm an Insider, since WU takes forever and three days to download and install, I have started to get my updates from UUPDump because I can download once and the installation is much faster on each of my 3 PCs.
In my experiences UUPDump is much faster and more dependable than using Windows Update. Lately I have been using Windows Update to test and it has improved some. Build 18890 took 1 hour and six minutes to install. I've had faster updates but I've also had way slower updates. Some updates have taken 3+ hours or more to install.

Edit: I forgot to add that some of the build updates using Windows Update made my computer impossible to use until the update finished.

Exactly, and RP qualifies as Insider. Microsoft released 18362 as RP so we Insiders can continue to test and out any lingering bugs. RP is not intended for John Q. Public to use, although it's my understanding that he can get it if he knows how.

I'm a bit confused as to whether John Q. Public can get RP through the Check for Updates button in WU. It seems to me that if clicking the Check for Updates button will get RP for John Q. Public, he just might be in for an unpleasant surprise! Although there is now the "permission to download" button, we all know there are click-happy people out there who would go right ahead and . . .

Oh, and speaking of releasing when it's ready, I can't tell you the number of times that Microsoft said a new product would be ready in a certain time frame (never concrete), and we beta testers and the devs said it wasn't ready for release yet, that Marketing stepped in and said, "We ain't agonna miss this deadline!" It happened with both Windows ME and Windows Vista, to name a couple. We all know what happened there!

    Hi there
Not only Ms is late with products -- I can't think of any major infrastructure project commissioned by any Govt (that I know of) that has ever been rolled out on time and within budget -- The latest set of bovine stupidity I read is - UK taxpayers beware !! that Train Drivers in the UK on their new Cross London Line are getting paid even though that Line won't be ready until late in 2022 (was scheduled for Dec 2018 !!!!) and the UK isn't the worst in this regard either.

I wouldn't blame Ms for some rather over optimistic estimates on delivering products -- in fact they seem rather better than most large companies !!! --Maybe it's just the way statistics and project management are taught or perhaps the gullability of consumers to the marketing hype and the "Get Rich Quick" brigade.

I do agree though if people use these pre-release products then they shouldn't be surprised if they encounter defects - presumably that's what these programs are designed to find out. What does though seem surprising is how when a defect is fixed that it again re-appears in a following release -- seems the art of regression testing isn't rigoursly performed any more.

    Cheers

I think its good that they're being cautious this time around. I get to test the next build before release.

I think MS has to get this update right. I am sure they want to get back the confidence of users since the last few updates were really bug ridden. I rather wait for an update that is free from major bugs.

Yes, I agree. And so far I’ve had no problems with RP—think it’s good.

I still don't understand what Insider Builds and/or the RP builds have to do with the May 2019 release approach.

I guess you could think of them as part of the development life cycle. As a build goes through the rings it should become more stable and have less "New".

RP is the last ring (testing) before the Feature update becomes widely available on Windows Update. RP should have very tight change management controls, you can fix, you cannot introduce new. It is also likely that they are now treating the Feedback hub from RP users with more diligence.

Last Feature update, 1809, they skipped RP and paid dearly as did a number of their clients.

They probably skipped RP last time because they knew they wouldn't pay much attention to the feedbacks. Maybe they are giving them more consideration this time around.
