You could temporarily disconnect the drive until after you have the May update installed.
Can't believe i didn't think of that. Early morning eyes and brain i'll put it down to! Wonder if they will rectify it though. Hopefully when the ext HD is plugged back in, my PC still recognises it after the new update.
@Wynona Might be luck of the draw then!

To me, the best possible advice is given in that thread...... "As always, it is a good idea to wait a month or two before you consider upgrading to a new feature update version of Windows 10; most bugs should be resolved by then."

I now have three installs of 1903, Via RP, Via WU. All upgrades, two to long standing installs and one to a recent clean install, (which is basically a clean install). Two of these installs had a USB3 connected 8TB Drive attached at time of upgrade. None of the systems has shown any sign of error

On the other hand, most of those bugs may be fixed by the time of final release. They are obviously working on them, otherwise they would release it now.

    Hi there

Still major problem with VMWare when using this build as a HOST - main problem is that a VM will start OK but if you attach any USB device such as an external HDD the VM will freeze and although the HOST will still be working you can't close the VMWare program or kill the VM without re-booting the host.

This is an ongoing problem also on the 20H1 builds too so I can't see this being released as a general public release until this issue is resolved.

There are literally 100,000's of VMWare users world wide using it in business -- not just privately at home and the suggestion to switch to HYPER-V as a get around might be OK for home users but definitely not for corporates. !!! Of course in the future they could save a slew of license fees but you can't just make this transition overnight !!!! in a large organisation.

    Cheers

Just read somewhere that MS, VMware and some third company are working together on Cloud applications, so situation may change soon. I'll check what happens on my 20H1 build.

    Hi there
    good to see something hapenning

I'm not sure why I haven't tried 20H1 as a host yet -- it's fine as a VM on a Linux box with WKS rel 15.0.4 - no prob with attaching devices to it. I'm not sure why though it wanted me to re--activate Office -- no probs as I've got a legit license.

I've nothing to do later today so I'll try and install 20H1 on a spare laptop and give it a whirl. I've still got a whole slew of W7/W8 keys from Technet days --they all still work for Windows upgrade -- not sure how long that loophole will last !!! - if it fails I'll backup an existing laptop and install there.

    Cheers

Just tried VMware and it does throw a GSOD when attempting to read USB, it shows up but faults as soon as it's opened. It's only Puppy Linux though.

I will agree with that, but most of the time the temptation is stronger about trying the new features and for that my first recourse is counting on my system image backup which is always up-to-date via differentials. Backing up is one of the most, if not the most important thing in computing. So I practice it religiously. lol

    Hi,
Nothing but extra ssd's and of course time dictates how many new or insider builds one can try or virtual machine installs one can have around.
Otherwise wait for it slow or not targeted update setting is there for a reason more stability maybe and I do mean maybe by waiting otherwise ms wanting for feedback/ data positive or negative is always a possibility.
