Yes, it's a new feature in 1903, and MS have promised it will be added to 1809/1803 (through a CU?) by the end of May. From Post #1...

This new “download and install” option will also be available for our most popular versions of Windows 10, versions 1803 and 1809, by late May.

...and here it is in action in 1903 Home:

possibly @Bree or @Brink might consider this worthy of a "sticky" thread - to me it's very big news.

To me, the best possible advice is given in that thread...... "As always, it is a good idea to wait a month or two before you consider upgrading to a new feature update version of Windows 10; most bugs should be resolved by then."
But, but, but . . . where's the danger in that!?

Seriously, since we're here to test for Microsoft, living dangerously is just something we do.

I now have three installs of 1903, Via RP, Via WU. All upgrades, two to long standing installs and one to a recent clean install, (which is basically a clean install). Two of these installs had a USB3 connected 8TB Drive attached at time of upgrade. None of the systems has shown any sign of error
And yesterday, as a test, I plugged my flash drive into one of our Sr. Center computers to upgrade and I got told that Windows 10 can't be installed on this computer. Guess I'll have to create a DVD, since I can't boot these older'n dirt 'puters with a flash drive to try that out.

I have an external HD more-or-less permanently attached to my computer and powered on, and it has never seemed to cause any problems with updates. I guess it's just another "one of those things".

DVD was the route I had to go with my old laptop. That worked with no problems.

I spotted this on "How-To Geek" Windows 10’s “Check for Updates” Button Just Got Safer

From one of the links within the article, Microsoft Abandons Windows 10’s Constant Forced Updates it would seem that this will be a very useful feature of the May update - one which many of us have long wanted. Actually putting much-missed Windows 7 functionality back into W10

Apologies if it's been posted before - I did seek but didn't find

UPDATE - possibly @Bree or @Brink might consider this worthy of a "sticky" thread - to me it's very big news.

We already had this as a sticky below (first post here).

That's a fact, because MS is already late, very late for this FU which was supposed to be delivered since March. We are now in May. On the flip side, I understand also they are being very careful not to repeat the same mistake made for 1809. Who can blame them?.
Has there ever been an official announcement saying the Spring or Fall Update should be in March? April? October? Seriously, Microsoft has habitually refused to be pinned down to any official date announcement.

The best they've done so far as to an "official announcement" this year is "late May" as announced at the top of this thread dated 04 Apr 2019 at 12:02 PM.

I had my doubts about this but yesterday it was confirmed that it will also be available for the Home version, you were right, just yesterday I wrote a post about this on Reddit (which is the source of all these articles).

    Hi there

problem with 1-yearly things is that if something doesn't work (for example in this 19H1 build the well known problems with VMWare) then it could take forever and a day to fix it. Meanwhile the risks of running on an old out of date release of an OS are well known with regard to security issues and the like.

Running legacy hardware and software on VM's is fine but one should keep the HOST as update as possible.

Taking a leaf out of the major Linux distros Windows should perhaps think more about a type of LTS or Long term release strategy where a new release is probably only released after SEVERAL years with fairly simple minor upgrades on the way - typically with a simple command like yum update. Stability these days is usually of more importance to most users rather than absolute leading edge.

Obviously new hardware devices etc need to be catered for but usually that doesn't require a new version of the OS.

Personally it seems to me that ms have made a complete pigs ear out of these releases -- half the people don't get the full updates, there's too many versions being maintained currently and it's almost impossible to predict what will work and what doesn't as nearly everybody (at least in these sections of the Forum) don't seem to have the same set of updates installed on their machines -- some install updates manually often not installing all of them, some don't get the full set etc etc.

    Cheers
    jimbo
If MS decided to do a yearly build update they would still do updates to fix known bugs. As for the VMWare bug is this a problem MS will fix or will VMWare have to release a fix. IMHO any new features should be released in the Skippy builds. When they feel it's ready then release it to the Fast Ring for more testing as as bugs are fixed keep moving down the list until it reaches RP. After being thoroughly tested in the RP ring then release it to the general public.

That's what the Insider builds are for. New builds should only be released when MS feels they are ready and not just to meet a deadline.
