Hi folks
@er557
USB DVD drive can be had for almost pennies these days
Less than 16 EUR and certainly you don't have to pay more than 20 EUR including VAT / Sales Tax etc.
-- If you can use an SSD in the space of the old DVD caddy and boot from it even a quite old laptop will be noticeably better in improvement
Note though my previous remarks in previous post on this thread about IDE / SATA interface if you are going to attempt this.
SSD -- even a mega cheap one say 128 GB , DVD 4.7GB so apart from speed etc capacity is even on these small SSD's around 20 times more -- plenty for music etc.
If you keep the DVD caddy you can open it (via eject / hardware button) as if there were a DVD in it and swap the SSD's -- much simply better than carrying a couple of SSD's around than some clunky old CD's / DVD's. Just RIP the old stuff.
When mounting the SSD's ensure the connector is also inside the caddy so easy access when swapping. Most of these DVD caddy's have penty of space for Molex / Sata connectors etc. If you move the laptop around just mount the SSD on to the DVD caddy with a bit of velcro which keeps the SSD stable when carrying the laptop and also makes it easy to swap SSD's if you want a removable SSD facility.
I've done this on an old Sony VAIO laptop - nice to have removable SSD's that work at "Internal SATA speed".. The VAIO thinks also it's an internal HDD so no probs with booting / installing Windows on it.
makes a great Test Rig for these builds which are coming in thick and fast. !!!!
Cheers
