@martyfelker
Hi there.
I have 3 of those Proliant servers -- all are the Microserver variety. 2 in use and one as "Spare".
I have one GEN 8 and 1 GEN 10 -- both work absolutely flawless. I did replace the Intel Celeron in the GEN 8 one with a XEON dual processor and it still flies. On the Gen 8 I replaced the DVD with an SSD and changed the built in RAID to AHCI. This meant I couldn't boot directly to the SSD but it will boot from an internal micro SD card (inside the machine on the mobo) so I have my Linux /boot partition on that and the rest of the OS on the SSD. The Gen 10 boots directly from the SSD port.
I run Linux on these and Windows VM's - Using VMware the VM's boot fine. I also use these microservers as NAS, stream video / audio to smart TV / amazon fire TV boxes and store backups etc.
(I also have a spare Gen 8 Microserver which I'll use if one of the others fails - currently it's idle).
I like the microservers as they have a very small footprint, are built as servers so designed for 24/7 running , have 4 bays for HDD's, 2 NIC's each and enough USB ports if required.
These boxes can still often be found on places like ebay - really cheap so anybody considering what to use as a NAS or test bed - especially for a load of VM's should consider these reliable bits of kit.
@CountMike
Not a fan of sticky notes whether physical tacky bits of yellow paper or software. Just looks messy -- if I can't remember stuff then IMO it's not worth doing !!!!!! -- just my take on it though. I like a reasonably clean desk as I have loads of hardware and other things so if I want to experiment I need a properly organised work space !!!.
Cheers
