New Windows 10 Insider Preview Skip Ahead Build 18850 (20H1) - March 6 Insider

Hi folks
As this is a Skip Ahead Build I think it would be great to offer people a new way of installing updates

I take the really simple example from a typical Linux distro -- people who think Linux is hard these days probably last tried it 20 years ago

You don't get nag update screens, random re-boots etc and the whole lot can be done with a really simple command !!

All works automatically, dependencies resolved etc etc.

C'mon windows it's 2019 now -- there's got to be a better way of managing your hideous update procedures. !!!

Here's the Linux simple command to check for and apply updates :



For those that want GUI's etc there's also an app YUMEX (YUM EXTENDER) that is a decent package installer and query facility.



This is where I'd like to see Windows going -- not spending so much time on new emojis, file explorer icons etc etc.

Most serious distros have semi-auto update and show warning when one is available. Mint is really good at that but so are most of Ubuntu distros.

Glad to see you are still with us !!!!
anyway I agree Linux Mint and loads of other distros all seem to have sensible ways of updating systems and applying fixes reasonably. Windows seems like a real historic dinosaur in how it manages the update processes.

This build though works as a VM on Linux Host --USB stuff also functions correctly so some improvement -- I do like your comment though on "Sleep Ahead Build" !!!!

anyway off now to watch some "Footie" with a few Bevs in a decent Bar even though it's -3 deg at the moment-- Europa League tonight -- not as good as Champions league but far better than the "Soaps" on Dumbed down TV schedules !!

On Linux HOST as a VM these defects seem to have been fixed. Didn't need to fiddle with VMware config file either to get the VM to boot and work. -- I set the boot to UEFI in the VM BTW and virtual HDD is a GPT HDD. (the VM is on an external SSD formatted with XFS Linux file system). Copied to internal SSD (say I MOVED it rather than I Copied it at ist boot after move otherwise activation gets lost), and works identically to the test version I had on the external SSD.

1) Attach USB3 / USB2 devices
2) Themes download and install from store OK
3) Networking isn't hosed up
4) IE 11 for those who use it has menus etc back again
5) Audio works fine -- mind you as a VM that uses Virtual Audio driver using Host hardware rather than a Windows driver so I can't say if it's broken on a physical machine.
6) Things like KODI play perfectly using multi-media files from NAS.
7) No probs with Office applications including email accounts. Email didn't work properly before - at least for me it didn't.
8) SAPGUI for accessing corporate SAP systems also works properly this time too --that's a bonus.

Still broken -- alternate display language -- get a horrible mix of both languages - neither one or the other decently !!! however it's a test system so not the most urgent thing that is broken.

Will play around with WSL . Can't play around with SANDBOX as I think you need to enable HYPER-V which will kill my VMware VM !!! as you can't run VMware and HYPER-V concurrently.

Anyway seems a bit better for me than the fast (19H1) release.
