As suspected, you didn't have the two registry entries, because your CPU microcode is up-to-date, according to Intel's microcode guidance. So even if you had installed any Microsoft provided microcode update, it will not load at boot time and certainly not created any registry entries.

Hi ddelo, that is true but the I/O seems to be biggest hit by Spectre, I looked at the standard AHCI (Storahci.sys) its version is 10.0.17763.168 date 12/5/2018 so not sure this would even be retpoline compiled, depends on how far back they started.
Probably when they roll this out in 19H1 enabled they will include driver support for it.
Little bit OT, I have a VMwin10 1809 (same setup and main/parent system) and noticed the value for "FeatureSettings" right above the other strings in reg doesn't match up between VM and main system, that values changes with each change you make with FeatureSettingsOverride/FeatureSettingsOverrideMask..
I looked around but couldn't find any info on FeatureSettings to see what it should be, I never messed with it before.
For example with 1809 default of FeatureSettingsOverride 0, FeatureSettingsOverrideMask 3 on my main system I have FeatureSettings 800 and on VM 0 value, could be that it is a VM, there no microcode AFAIK.
I don't think that would happen, windows should load a default AHCI driver, just like if you uninstall your video driver you still have VGA standard driver.
You could also just update and point it to system32\drivers\storahci.sys from Device manager but probably best to wait this should get sorted IMO when it's fully rolled out.
Mine was 0 and i make it 800. (i7 4790)
In 19h1 it becomes 400.
Even if u uninstall from device manager iastora it continues to run if u see it with driverview program. (nirsoft)
The right procedure is:
From device manager u must
1)uninstall first the driver with the option delete it permanently
2)restart your machine
3)from cmd admin : sc delete iastora
All the actions with your responsibility.

Thanks, that sounds right, with a 400/400 I think I did get FeatureSettings of 400, would have to check, but that matches mine so must be VM are different being shared HW.
Edit, Setting a 400/400 made featureSettings c00 but in my VM it is 400 for same settings (FeatureSettingsOverride/.FeatureSettingsOverrideMask)
