    According to some benchmarking done, form @EdKiefer, it seems that there is a small performance improvement. Nothing major, but at least not degradation

    Many thanks. I'd give you some Rep but I can't do that on this thread for some reason. Despite not having a FeatureSettingsOveride key, InSpectre still shows I'm OK. I'm confused!

    Steve,
    Consider the rep already given, by just saying so!

    Now, InSpectre, although great tool in the early Spectre/Meltdown stages, is quite old and not updated for a long time (long time, compared to the extremely fast pace the various Spectre variants are found)
    If your BIOS/UEFI CPU microcode is up to date, according to the intel suggested revision, then it's absolutely normal not to have the two registry entries and be protected. Furthermore the latest Microcode updates by Microsoft, do not create the Registry entries and apparently Windows 10 check on boot the revision of the BIOS/UEFI microcode revisions and either supersede it with their Update or leave it as is, if it's up to date!... Confusing stuff, I know!
    Check it out with this script

    The Retpoline thing is a failry new software, developed by Google, and is supposed to provide some perfoemance improvement, while mitigating Spectre variant 2. Details in the Windows Kernel Internals blog post

    The most up-to-date way of checking the status of your PC against the various Spectre variants and Meltdown is to run the Microsoft Get-SpeculationControl PowerShell Script.

    Yep!!!

    and make the FeatureSettingsOverride 400 and the FeatureSettingsOverrideMask 400

    Save the following as .reg file and import it in Registry, by double clicking it!

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]
    "FeatureSettingsOverride"=dword:00000400
    "FeatureSettingsOverrideMask"=dword:00000400

    Or Open PowerShell as Admin and run the following two commands:
    Code:
    New-ItemProperty -Path 'Registry::\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management' -Name FeatureSettingsOverride -PropertyType DWord -Value 1024
    New-ItemProperty -Path 'Registry::\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management' -Name FeatureSettingsOverrideMask -PropertyType DWord -Value 1024
    OK - just adding those Registry keys worked and Retpotline is now enabled. Why doesn't MS make this easier since most people will be clueless this additional security option exits?

    If you're asking me as a Microsoft representative, I'm sorry to say that I'm not....(They approached me a few years ago, but I was happy with my job then and turned them down)
    If it's a rhetorical question, the answer is very simple: It's Microsoft's way to sharpen your mind by adding more and more knowledge!

    Glad you got it working!

    BTW, do me a favor and run this script, just to verify why you didn't have the two Registry options in the first place!

    A proposal to everyone looking for answers, regarding Retpoline and mitigation of Spectre variants

    Enable Retpoline to mitigate Spectre variant 2 (CVE-2017-5715)

    You don't have to manually enable Retpoline. A future cumulative update will enable it if it's not already enabled. And if you're more concerned about security than a small performance boost, having Retpoline enabled is really not that important.

    Retpoline can work on 6th generation and newer Intel Core processors if something called Retpoline underflow mode is implemented. I don't know if this was ever added to the Linux kernel. It might have been abandoned.

    Not as far as I can see. A check for updates on my one remaining PC that hasn't yet had been updated has just found KB4482887.

    Attachment 226940

    What makes you think it was pulled?
    Because it was causing issues for gaming and mice.

    I also uninstalled the update as well. And suspended WU for a month. Hopefully a new update will be out to fix the gaming issues.
