By the way, geeks, if you are using Edge or want to test it, there's an excellent light weight and free third party utility to manage Edge favourites. I've been using it for quite some time now, it being one of the default applications I always add to my deployment images.

Download and more information: Manage Edge Favorites

Linux is very different from Windows. It runs fine with just the kernel and a few binary for interaction.

In Windows everything has been deeply married into itself for a very long time. And it's extremely difficult to remove these dependencies, because then a lot of applications would simply not work anymore.

However, Linux kernel has this issue in the kernel too. There's a lot of bugs, and trying to remove them also breaks a lot of software that depend on the kernel.

@Kari that Manage Edge Favorites application is very useful. Only issue I have with it is that I haven't found a way to rearrange things in bulk using multi selection. And it's a bit slow. Other than that, it's brilliant.

Either way, the biggest issue with Windows and it's bugs is its legacy codebase and backwards compatibility. If Windows 10 development would have truly started from scratch I'm quite confident Windows would be working much better than it does right now.
    Hi there
it used to --remember when IBM and Ms shared code development and then had a row and split -- IBM which had OS/2 an infinitely better OS and designed for multi-tasking and multi user right from the start went after a rather (at that time) sceptical and sluggish corporate market who hadn't yet understood the concepts of individual workstations while Ms went for home users who were extremely enthusiastic for the idea. Ms continued to develop windows initially for single user built on top of its Ms DOS system.

Anyway the rest is history -- OS/2 is no more while Windows still powers the majority of the world's PC's and workstations.

Anyway as far as Edge is concerned -- I still don't like it and as there are perfectly acceptable alternatives I'm content to use those instead.

    Cheers

DOS and OS/2 / Windows NT are architecturally two very different things and has nothing to do with each other, other than that we had a DOS-based Windows (Windows 3.11/95/98/ME) and an NT-based Windows (NT 3.1-10.0). Later MS merged the best of both worlds into one codebase and got rid of all the DOS dependencies in the process.

EDIT: OS/2 was brilliant until the corporate world killed it completely.

OS/2 was used in servers long after it was dead on the desktop.

    Hi there
NT was of course different but that was never designed for home use - and if you've ever tried to use it -- what an absolute dog -- we called it Windows Neanderthal or Windows No Thanks. To get even the simplest network up and running needed a doctorate in Engineering and computing. At the server level things only started working properly at Windows 2000 server and eventually Windows 2003 Server which probably was the high point in Ms OS'es.

OS/2 was actually a very decent OS - especially for its time. Far more stable than the old Ms + Novell sort of cludge which passed for a Network -- no wonder Ms has never IMO really got networking 100% right whereas OS/2 worked (although IBM also used a hideous Token Ring type of card !! for attaching workstations to its Mainframes).

All my Linux systems have networking running properly straight out of the box if a LAN is used - these days though most standard wifi cards are also built in so using wifi on a Linux system shouldn't be a problem.

The post was to show though had IBM and Ms co-operated I'm sure Windows would be absolutely robust compared to how it sort of works today.

Don't get me wrong -- for a lot of gaming, ease of use for home users and running almost every piece of hardware that can be thrown at it Windows of course is fine -- I just don't think though it ever could do networking 100% reliably every time and current Q.C and development on such a vast product requires a lot more due diligennce and attention than seems to be coming out of Ms.

    Cheers

I agree, that the way you went ahead and managed any Windows NT distribution was a big pain until Windows 2000 was released. 2000 was crazy slow compared to ME, but at least it was stable.

There are still a lot of parts of that mess and headaches around in both Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016. But at least now the hardware part works decently. Software part has still a very long way to go, because I think some parts is made overly complex to do for very basic and simple things.

On Linux all this is very straight forward and easy to manage or modify.

Yep, Windows networking is still very clumsy. On Linux "It Just Works".

Fun fact: Linux was twice as fast at gaming compared to Windows during the ME/2000 era.

I played Unreal Tournament with my friends and on Windows I got around 100FPS while on Linux I got 200FPS and that was with a dedicated UT server running in the background and 4 other clients connected to my server. Everything, including networking was extremely stable and smooth. On Windows everything was sluggish even after a reboot and playing stand alone.

Times has changed, now Linux is about 20-30% slower in gaming compared to Windows. But mostly that has to do with poor optimizations.
