    Hi folks

    another regression found on this build.

    VMWare Workstation -- XP and W7 VM's won't run from external USB drive - Host is W10 pro X-64 latest skip ahead build. Linux VM will run but won't attach any USB devices -- even when VM indicates connected.

    just get black screen and VM never boots up -- can't shut VM's down either.

    Same XP VM from same external HDD running on current (normal) Windows build. External devices can be attached too without problem.

    Attachment 223593

    seems something with USB devices on this skip ahead build. Will now wait for the next one.

    Cheers

    Every time I try to connect to a USB drive VMWare and Linux Mint lock up and I have to restart my laptop.

    I just did a clean install of VMWare Player and Linux Mint and Linux Mint will not start. All I get is a black screen. VirtualBox runs OK.

    Hi there

    Thanks guys -- definitely combo of VMWare and USB is hosed up in this release -- always glad when others report same problems - otherwise you can't be sure if it's you who has hosed up the system or if a genuine defect.

    Not blaming VMWare on this as you can't really expect them to work on every new build Ms puts out - especially if these builds are to be replaced within weeks at the most. Surprised VBOX works but can't be bothered swapping at this stage - also I like the VMWARE feature of snapshoting VM's too.

    Centos will run in a VM but if you try and attach a USB drive system locks up as others have reported with Linux Mint etc and system needs to re-boot --- Windows VM's just don't start at all -- Black screen.

    Cheers

    I'm slowly getting use to VirtualBox. I still prefer VMWare though.

    Hi there
    @CountMike
    great if you got it working -- perhaps I've got a rogue machine !!!! however I think I'll wait till the next build. As an interest though in the vmware config on your system did you set the USB parameter to USB2 or USB3. If USB2 could you try with USB3. I really don't need slow USB2 speeds for attached drives where I might be running backups etc. Streaming doesn't need hideously fast I/O but backups etc really do.

    I can confirm the incompatibility problem. Even if I I delete the .lck files and folders the VMs under Windows won't start. Perhpas that will change with the next release - I'm hoping for a 19H2 Skip Ahead build

    I can also confirm the problem appears to be Windows. All my VMs work fine under Fedora Rawhide with kernel 4.20. Kernel 5.0.0 does not compile but probably a month before more users than me will be complaining to VMware.

    There is also the problem with a weekly release that next weeks build is done before much test data on this weeks is available.
    I've said it many times in the past, and I'm sure this is NOT a popular opinion on here, but it's because M$'s insider program is a sham. They aren't truly taking user feedback and fixing things important to us. They do want to project that image, but in reality they are only fixing things which fall within their agenda, and making it look like they are listening to user feedback. It makes them look good to have an image of listening to the masses. But we have seen throughout the history of this program so many problems which were highly upvoted which never got fixed, and continue not to be fixed.
    I still like getting early builds, and playing with them, as it's interesting. But I have no illusions of M$ taking anything written in the Hub seriously, unless it supports something they were already looking to do. It's very much the way politicians work. JMHO.

    Hi there
    @CountMike

    Thanks for the USB3/USB2 test -- USB2 works but slooooow compared with USB3. USB3 fails and locks system.

    Always appreciate people testing stuff on request -- hopefully I'll do the same if people need it.

    Anyway enjoy your evening / Morning (Serbia / Canada??)

    Cheers
