    Hi there @CountMike

    some of these people must be logging into really dubious sites -- most countries now have ISP blocking URL's to prevent people logging on to places like pirate bay etc so if they get a pup it's not due to ignorance as it takes a bit of knowlege to bypass these ISP blocks -- e.g tor.

    So I say again for probably around 99% of Windows users old 3rd party AV systems are just SNAKE OIL.

    I usually agree with you 99% of the time but I think on this one --I'm standing my ground -- simarly as I'm probably against most of my UK colleagues in thinking that BREXIT wasn't the best of ideas that ever eminated from those islands. But that's their call !!.

    Cheers

    Hi folks
    @WEKJR

    You don't need things like MBAM any more on HOME computers --I've made a few posts on explaining why C21 AV systems are totally different from C20 stuff and especially to those who have been using these things for "a long time" or "ages". (Old versions of Windows e.g W7 needed all this sort of stuff)

    Now W10 is decently defended with WD and in any case the idea of hacking home computers doesn't attract geeks or get any "Street Cred" any more - but making money via Internet Scams and Frauds is now big business and AV software won't protect you against that type of stuff.

    For Home networks these 3rd party AV systems are essentially "SNAKE OIL" -- your problem on computers now is not old fashioned hackers trying to disrupt a few miserable consumer home computers - that hacking era is well passed - so last century C20.

    The new point of the game is MAKING money via scamming. Even Pirate Bay site doesn't want malware torrents any more as bad reputation ruins advertising revenue -- and with cheap legal streaming alternatives these torrent sites need to maintain their user level to attract revenue.

    So IMO WD is just fine -- anything else is really in 2019 just total SNAKE OIL. (Again just for Home computers -- commercial and cloud servers face different protection issues).

    On Home Computers forget any 3rd party AV -- WD works just fine. Anything else is a waste of time and resource - and WD is updated almost daily. (I'm not again talking about commercial LAN's / Cloud servers etc - just HOME computers).

    Cheers

    There's still tons of SW out there with PuPs.
    I'm with WD for some time now, but calling everything else Snake oils is a bit too much (I think)…

    When using WD as your primary VA, it's a good idea to enable PUP protection:

    Enable or Disable Windows Defender PUA Protection in Windows 10 | Tutorials

    type

    Code:
    Get-MpPreference
    New Windows 10 Insider Preview Fast Build 18323 (19H1) - Jan. 24-image.png
    in Power shell, and if "PUAProtection" is 0, enable it:

    Code:
    Set-MpPreference -PUAProtection enabled

    What ISP blocks ? Anything goes here, nobody's blocking anything. Kids are worst, they always stick their noses in the wrong places. Piracy is rampant too. they would go to any lengths just to get what they (and their peers) think of, even to extent to disable AV only to get a crack for a game. One can only guess the troubles they can get in.

    @AndreTen

    Hi that's fine

    What is relevant is that for most purposes these things aren't worth installing any more -- they don't bring anything extra to the table and just slow the machine down.

    These things had value in W7 days and even in early W10 days but not any more. Note though I've probably got a reputation here as trying to get 3rd party AV suppliers out of business -- well partly true but the whole nature of the beast has changed that I think I'm correct on this one. W10 with WD is more than sufficient on most Home computer systems. If you don't see any more posts from me over the next few days -- well maybe the Russian Software designers wern't too keen on my remarks . !!!

    Cheers

    Hi, Jimbo:

    No matter what any of us think, the nasties are out there, and if one isn't careful, something that Gramma's lye soap won't take off will hop onto the system.

    I'd hate to make such a blanket statement as yours and the next day, a hacker comes along that will kill computers only protected by WD! Talk about a pariah!

    You say there are no longer any hackers out there interested in home systems, but I beg to differ! It's not always about commercial systems hackers; you have your garden variety teenager interested in finding what he/she can do to his friend's, neighbor's, enemies' computers. Those are the ones we need to worry about, and they're running rampant.

    So, who are we kidding when we advocate one AV type app, when it's obvious Microsoft is aware of what can happen; otherwise, why would they have made it possible to have a secondary AV on one's computer? It hasn't always been that way, ya know.

    Just sayin' . . .

    No Problems Yet...

    18323 installed (upgrade from 18317 through WU) without a hitch--the usual ~20 minutes for the offline portion of the installation. Smooth sailing thus far...
