    Update failed on all 8 of my computers with error 0x800f0986 on all of them. However it did install on my 2 laptops and on and my Release Preview computer. I even tried to install from the msu package.
    It's possible, according to that error code, you do not have the most current Servicing Stack installed on the 8 failing machines. This is from post #1 this thread. Verify you have the most current and download and install it if you do not.

    Before installing this update

    Microsoft strongly recommends you install the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system before installing the latest cumulative update (LCU). SSUs improve the reliability of the update process to mitigate potential issues while installing the LCU. For more information, see Servicing stack updates.

    Didn't get offered this, so am trying manual update from catalog. Wonder if I'll also see the SSU error message? Waiting now . . .
    Completed successfully. Interesting. Will add further here if anything manifests during restart.

    @GUMBY,
    Remember that the latest SSU

    If you are using Windows Update, the latest SSU (KB4470788) will be offered to you automatically. To get the stand-alone package for the latest SSU, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog.

    The main issue here is to try to find out why you cannot update Win 10 normally. If after trying the steps in the aforementioned tutorials in post #34, you can try to run:
    -Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /restorehealth
    -sfc /scannow (to see if there are any integrity violations)
    - try to repair install Windows (in-place upgrade):
