Phew, I have escaped the bullet! My stuck system has jumped the failing 282 update and decided to try the 290. And it worked.
Don't really know what happened but this morning I wasn't hopeful as I thought it would keep trying the failing version and it did. Then I got on the search AGAIN and this time added the failing ntdll.dll component. Saw an answer to someone with a win 7 or 8 problem with this component and was told to re-register ntdll.dll plus a few others.
So I registered ntdll.ll with regsvr32 and then soon after I saw the update was downloading 290!!!
Not sure whether the register had anything to do with it but I am now a much happier Insider.
Hopefully back to my smooth ride with these updates.
No bounces here - went pretty quickly and smoothly.
Not bad for me 2 1/2hrs including a troubleshoot WU sat on 99% downloading for 15 mins.
running Malwarebytes (trial) so that bug seems to have been cleared.

Just under the hour to desktop here. One of the fastest I've had. No immediate problems. I have both Malwarebytes premium and Vipre AV running, with periodic scans by Windows Defender.
