Oh yes, emotion provoking ZDNet strikes again
And there's no doubt that ZDNET has a fix for every Windows problem.

Every features update has had issues with particular hardware/software. MS routinely block the automatic roll out to such machines until the issues are resolved. Remember Broadcom and the Creators Update?

I agree with you but they should have corrected the mapping issue by now - and others.
I'm very hesitant to upgrade to 1809 after what happened. 1803 works fine for me at the moment.

    FWIW.

It gets to the restart stage and then tells me it failed....I've tried every trick in the book. I think it's my old Alienware rig, it has something that doesn't like 1809 at all.
At present I'm hiding the update in WUShowHide.
    At build 1709 until.....who knows?

One would think that the problem of the white flash when opening or maximizing a window should improve in the next big update (19H1) but it seems that no, I made a comparison between the build 17763 and the build 18282 in this comment.

Well, 1809 works fine for me. But then I'm not domain-connected so don't see the network mapping issue. As newly released features updates go, this one seems more 'polished' than most (especially 1803 with its 'Insiders feedback frequency' still left in place and greyed out until 17134.112).

But if you have any reservations about 1809 (and who can blame you) I'm with Microsoft on this, who say "We encourage you to wait until the feature update is offered to your device automatically".

Ex_Brit you may wish to have a look at this.

Notice the SetupDiag download, may point you to issue. Of course you might have a driver or app that is a known issue to 1809 and MS isn't ready for your machine. Did you force the update or did WU offer the update?

I haven't seen WU offer the 'Feature update to Windows 10, version 1809' yet on any 1803 machine, either through the automatic check or by clicking 'check for updates'. I don't think the roll out has started to push 1809 yet. I have left an 1803 test machine running 24/7 just to see if/when it starts....
