My wife's laptop, Asus, i5 has not updated. We've been pressing check for updates and still nothing. (Home, no metered connection)

I still expect it to go 1809 before 19xx is released to Windows update.

Sometimes, it is a good thing to check the "Advanced options in Windows Update" to see if it is set to Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted). If not you won't get the update to 1809. Oftentimes, this has been changed unbeknownst to the user or even by him/her and had forgotten about it:

One of two things is going to happen: either you will be upgraded to 1903 and everything will be OK with no lag behind; or your lappy won't be able to accept the upgrade for any of many reasons: drivers not up-to-date, hardware issues and so on... At this point, you will have to figure out why.
I will take this opportunity as an experiment.

Apparently, an MVP at the Microsoft Community does not have this bug. He has version 17763.402.

I have filed the bug in the Dutch Feedback Hub. Perhaps some upvoting could make them aware: https://aka.ms/AA4mvr6

That doesn't give me any indication on your intention, but I can tell you that your system image backup is your best bet and I would never be able to live without it. That is the main reason why I backup almost every day by alternating between MR & EaseUs ToDo.

Last night, I had a problem with Nvidia GeForce latest driver's update which has blown out all my audio system. I used MR to roll back to an image taken on Monday 25, 2019; that didn't work. I went further back on Saturday, March 23, 2019. There, everything went back to normal, as well as my headphones (Bose & Sony).

After that, I decided to use DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) to reinstall Nvidia's Display adapter without all the extras. The GeForce Experience has been also removed. The latter has probably been the culprit. My audio is now working A1.

All in all, this is to tell you that it is good to take your chances by using MS's update assistant as long as you have a system image backup.

My intention is to wait and see what will happen to this lappy by Micosoft's hands. Obviously it's not my main machines, and this one is quite old without any sensitive data or personal files etc, hence my experimentation.

Does anyone know if performance and security will be the main priorities for upcoming releases?

I just love it when my Windows 10 PC is super responsive even when I'm dealing with severe mental fatigue...

Now, I do understand and I really wish you well. Go for it! The only thing is that for now no one really knows when MS is going to surprise us all with 19H1; is it in two, three, four weeks from now?. Time will tell.

Don't worry, many of these people who respond there are clueless (including some "MVPs"), Jen Gentleman (Software Engineer at Microsoft) has already responded in Reddit that they are "looking into it".
