I upgraded to1809 a few days ago but I've had to use the MCT the last couple of times because I was never presented an option to upgrade via Windows Update. I kind of prefer it this way so I control when it's done and am fully prepared (ie, backup of backups, and a system image just prior to updating).

That's why it is a good thing to always have a system image backup ready in case things like that happen. I backup everyday with MR and always check for updates without any fear that I would become a beta tester (like for seekers or advanced users who do that in the third or fourth week of the month).

Words have meanings, especially in technical applications. "Push" means something other than how people have been using it here lately.

IMHO, Any update that MS sends to your device without giving you control over is being pushed or forced to the device.

Not technically. WU on your computer periodically polls MS for updates. MS makes them available for WU to download and install.. Like I said, it can seem like a 'push', but technically it is not, and I'd like to see the term retain clarity. There's enough fuzziness and obfuscation as it is.
