I had some and same problems with my HP Lj 1025 printer on both builds, regular and Skippy, resolved only by using universal HP printer driver. It's poor with options but works now. There are some 3rd party printer enhancing programs but it's enough that it works. Haven't tried my older ones HP Lj6 and Lj4M, don't have cartridges for them anyway. HP programs don't work since 1709.
Right Count, I stopped using a printer when I first started using Windows 10, the driver for my HP Scanner/Printer was all I could get to work. With the cost of ink being higher than the Printer, I stopped using them. I really have no use for one now.

For anyone who has a need for a printer but doesn't want to pay an arm and a leg for ink cartridges, then a (very) few have refillable ink tanks. I have an Epson EcoTank and the drivers work fine in 1809.

I need a good laser printer all the time, almost daily. I got this one used for about 40 bucks with spare cartridge so it's a good deal. That Laser jet 4 was probably best printer HP ever made. I had one back n Toronto in the factory, printing labels day in and out for few years and only needed one drum although we were spending at least two cartridges a week. It just never quit.

Laser printers are very affordable nowadays and ultimately cheaper in long run but certainly easier to maintain and virtually trouble free comparing to inkjets.

I would get a Lazer printer if I needed one but I don't need one anymore. They are quite inexpensive today.

But inkjets produce the best glossy photo prints, which is the main use for mine. With bottled ink being cheap it makes it economical to print A4 photos for display.

Photos and glossy stuff yes but pain fro occasional use. A laser printer can sit for ages unused. My Lj6 was sitting under a friends porch for 2 - 3 years and still worked when plugged in.

I've had a HP LaserJet P1102w for about 10 years, changed the cartridge once. It's worked flawlessly on Win 7 & 10.
I seldom use it, but, I don't have to worry about dry ink cartridges. No use for color printers anymore, the ink is way too expensive to be tossing out 3 dried out cartridges.

My 10 year old hp laser jet is working fine in 10 and I get my toner cartridges from amazon for around $10 each so I'm happy. I like my color pages right now.
