I've always been more impressed with the ability to do a lot even when your hardware is limited.
I'm on 6GB as I said and it seems like 16GB is becoming the norm now...
4GB is the absolute minimum on a 64-bit system and will often cause issues when multitasking a lot. 8GB is enough for most users except for AAA-title gamers which need minimum of 16GB for a smooth experience. Content creators will most likely need 32GB and beyond. Working with AI and simulations one might need 64GB and beyond, depending on the size of data sets.
It all depends on your workflow. Personally I find 8GB being usable, but 16GB would improve performance a bit.
There really is no one answer to cover them all here.

I do plan on increasing the ram when my finances allows me. I was going to use the ram from my old system but I found out that both stick were defective.

I haven't experienced any noticable slowdowns yet. I will be increasing the ram to 12GB or more in the near future though.

Was a bit surprised with the cost of old ram. Checking out the price for a 4 GB module for a DDR2 PC2-6400 was £70. Cheaper on an auction site I admit. Seeing that the laptop is only worth scrap value I shall continue to use just 4 GB ram. Not bad really as with five tabs open in Vivaldi it's only using 75% ram.

I have 12 GB RAM - my system came with it. I rarely exceed 5 GB of actual usage, though of course a lot will be used for cache and such if it's available, significantly improving performance. When Windows starts to feel the bottom of the memory pool, it can get pretty sluggish with swapping. That said, I've never felt an urge to go to 16 GB.

Because I plan on buying 1 or 2 8GB sticks. It will depend on the price.

OKay I just finished upgrading to Feature 1809 and it took about 2 hours to finish updating in total!

“The Windows Update service was impacted by a data corruption issue in an external DNS service provider global outage on January 29, 2019. The issue was resolved on the same day and Windows Update is now operating normally, but a few customers have continued to report issues connecting to the Windows Update service. We expect these issues will go away as downstream DNS servers are updated with the corrected Windows Update DNS entries.”

One question that remains unanswered for me taking in consideration the big 1809 lunch mess, is that what's the current 1809 state compared to
1803!? Are people still on 1803 better off and have more stable windows experience or they are missing something not have updated yet? I am also
surprised not to see any updates from MS after January 22!?
