    I thought Windows has been handling long names for several generations by now.
    @swarfega

    Hi there the internal kernel might well handle it - but the problem is applications that still call on the File explorer interface which means for home users - everything from media players, email attachments, any application that has a file browser interface e.g vlc for example.

    In any case making abbreviations etc is a hideous process for huge music collections etc -- I like to have some sort of description in file / directory name --why not -- other OS'es handle it so why not Windows.

    Interesting to see how say Macrium backs up one of these directories. However on display it uses the file browser (explorer interface) so you'll also see the same sort of rubbish names (was it Dos 8.3 format or something as default) I posted earlier.

    Cheers

    Very rarely have I needed a file name that long and if you do , use abbreviations or something.
    Very often when handling media and you have a lot of it. Terabytes of data. Abbreviations is not an option. I fully understand how @jimbo45 feels about this. It's really annoying.

    I can understand it for music but I tend to solely use online streaming these days.

    The best music isn't available on any online streaming service. Ask @jimbo45

    I'm happy with what Spotify carry and I don't listen to mainstream pop.

    Hi folks

    @swarfega

    @slicendice

    99.9% of my music would probably not come near any streaming service especially compressed into fairly high levels of mp3 compression.

    With 64 / 128 GB phone cards I just copy what I want every so often into android phone (it handles long file names as android is a "Linux type OS") and that works far better than any modern essentially "thump Thump Bang Bang" type of music -- for me Road drills and JCB construction vehicles sound better than some modern stuff !!.

    I doubt whether a tiny fraction of this lot would ever appear for example on Spotify - and the compression would make it sound horrible anyway.

    I am really pis*ed off with the current philosophy that some Insiders can see a development but not others. As I said earlier, Roman law of Murphus Maximus means I NEVER get to see them. It makes no sense whatsoever to restrict the Snip&Sketch updates.
