    Hi there

    @slicendice

    It's often a lot quicker and easier to quickly use network map (if you have a lot of machines on your LAN it's not always easy to remember which drives / folders you want to map. I sometimes might have 8 or 9 if I'm testing a load of VM's.

    This morning currently only 2 up -- W10 (old version 1803) and a Linux (physical) NAS which has 4 HDD's on it.

    Old way of mapping network drive (I'm on Windows 1803).

    Far easier IMO than the new way and less keystrokes too.

    Cheers

    Hehehe, my memory is as good as what a chicken can remember (max 3 seconds and it's gone). Still I manage to know where stuff is located, because of proper naming conventions, folder and file structures for everything I store on any drive.

    I don't use File Explorer that much. It's slow and ugly.

    What do you use then? I've never noticed File Explorer to be slow.

    Hi there

    @slicendice

    I agree -- but if you had to remember what was on all these drives !!!!!!!!!! (note the Linux file browser I'm using is light years faster !!!!!!} your memory would make you real serious money in a fairground !!!!!!!! or on TV quizzes.

    Note also File explorer still has that ridiculous 250 or so character name restrictions that Linux browsers don't -- with a lot of music categories etc and things like 10 TB drives directory and file names can get quite long

    Anyway Disk size to map in Windows

    Linux has no problems with these -- but File explorer makes a real pigs ear of the names

    Linux sees :

    Windows file explorer sees : It's a real dogs dinner !!!

    How in the world do you then remember that lot to mount in Windows !!!!!!!

    Also Please Ms do fix this file naming restriction.

    Cheers

    Hi there
    @swarfega

    there are zillions of different ones you can use -- Midnight commander is a good one -- I'm just using the bog standard one built into the KDE desktop (using KDE workspace as a GUI on that machine). Different Linux GUI's also have their own standard ones -- user gets a choice !!!!.

    Still my main point is when is the wretched windows file system going to be fixed so it can handle long names. I'm not surely the only person on the planet using 10 TB HDD's etc.

    Cheers

    I thought Windows has been handling long names for several generations by now.

    Yes, that 256 character limit is an issue in Windows. Modern OS in my a**!
