Even MS has publicly admitted that their AV software is bottom of the line, just like those independent testers.
Anyone running that stuff is taking their life in their hands. Not good!
I tend to agree with that statement.

I would likely be the poster child for reckless surfing the net. Ever since 2001 I have been using the latest Norton product with active subscription on 3 different machines running XP, W7, W8, W8.1, W8.1.1 and now W10 and have never, ever, EVER been infected with a virus, unwanted malware, Adware or anything. Since it's been available I have been using MBAM and scan every several days but it never finds anything except an occasional PUP from something I did deliberately. I would never recommend to any user that Defender is enough as your primary defense.
Many still say Norton is a resource hog, well my current version shows 11 MB in task manager but Cortana eats up 28.9 MB in task manager whether I like it or not and it is disabled. Talk about resource hog, but I guess that's OK for some.

BTW, When I updated my 6 month old HP laptop (8.1) to W10 my current Norton product never even blinked and it was not uninstalled or even disabled prior to the upgrade.

And NO! I do not have any association with Norton

Purely out of interest and as an experiment, could you do a scan with Hitman Pro and ADWcleaner.

Both are free and only take a couple of minutes to perform.

I am not suggesting for one moment that Norton is not as efficient as you state, but In the interests of all in this forum it would be useful to know the results.

Generally I do not like to install programs just for the sake of experimentation especially when there is no indication for them and no observed need however, I agree that this would be an interesting test. Sometime over the next several days I will look into doing just as you suggested. I can't remember the last time I had even the slightest hint of adware on either of my PC's, years probably or close to never. I have zero familiarity with either of the products you mentioned but it seems both are fairly common. What would be the best site to download these programs from to avoid unwanted add-ons and allow a custom install to avoid unintended items.? I will see what I can do and get back. I guess that's why I have REVO Pro Uninstaller and it's Trace Install feature.

Both of these programs I recommend can be had at "Bleeping Computer" a very reputable computer forum.
I post both links from this site.

You may be pointing to the advice I give to family and friends seeking assistance (especially with infected machines):
There is no ONE program that does it ALL. I venture to guess that when Hitman Pro and ADWcleaner are run as you suggested, some malware/nasties will be found.

OK, you got my curiosity up.

Ran AdwCleaner. I only attached the shots of categories where there were any listings. I must admit I do not know the significance of any of these. I ran this on my 20 month old desktop still running 8.1 because it is much faster than my W-10 Laptop and older and far more used. The only scans that have ever been run on this PC Norton and MBAM paid version.

    My guess is:

    the eBay one is nothing,

the yahoo FF plugin is there because yahoo is the default browser for FF now.

protector.dll is suspicious (a Protector belonging to Tenebril Protector from Tenebril Inc.?) a BHO - browser helper object (usually browser hijacker/spyware)

the Reg key for Appscion " Appscion is a software distribution platform that helps publishers monetize their traffic." REMOVE!

and the rest should also be deleted. They are toolbars/browser hijackers/spyware.

    How did I do? ;-)

EDIT: Tenebril produces consumer security software products. Our premium product GhostSurf Platinum, offers comprehensive online privacy and spyware protection, helping users to protect their identity while on the Internet. Our SpyCatcher Express product is a popular free download. GhostMyMail is an innovative anti-spam solution that eliminates spam without restricting users online activities.

    Ring any bells?

Gator. Nothing ventured nothing gained, if after the scan you had clicked on "Cleaning" your computer then would shut down and restart, comprehensively listing everything it had removed and from where, naming each O/S.

I wouldn't mind betting Hitman Pro would find a few more, Its free for a month.
