EU Commission approves Microsoft's acquisition of Github

The European Commission approved on Friday the acquisition of software development tool maker GitHub by software giant Microsoft without conditions saying the purchase would not damage competition in the sector.
“The Commission found that the combination of Microsoft and GitHub’s activities on these markets would raise no competition concerns because the merged entity would continue to face significant competition from other players on both markets,” it said in a statement.
Not sure if the EU commission is the correct or even competent entity to deal with this type of question -- what about users in non EU countries (sorry Brits -- NOT getting into BREXIT discussion here - not the time, place or correct forum for that).
My worry here is that on GitHub there is a huge amount of source code on it - very useful also for developers.
I just wonder whether Ms will still keep it open, accessible and free and also not "filch" eiher directly or indirectly source code which it can later incorporate into its own commercial (i.e non open source) products.
I wonder also whether Linux developers / downloaders will be disadvantaged with Ms's take over of GitHub.
For those of us who use it it's a great service - I'm not sure whether Ms is the right entity to guarantee its independence -- reminds me of that old saying of The Fox guarding the Henhouse.

You do tend to meander.. but I agree overall - MS has become more open-sourced-minded of late, either way they don't own the code, so no harm done.
