What this update has taught me is that O&O Shutup10 cannot be trusted to block updates! Having now done this CU, i'm trying the update blocking tool from this forum to see if it works better.

For blocking updates? It's the tool from this thread:

Thanks Dirk, I saw it in that monster thread about 1809 and didn't have the courage to hunt it down, thanks again!

I've had success in the past blocking a feature update setting my internet connection (ethernet) to metered via Settings and then using the hide/show tool by Microsoft to check for the feature update and then hide it when it is found. I'm going to try and do this with 1809 when it comes back up. I've been meaning to check out the various other third party windows update block tools but haven't had a chance to test any of them. I still want windows defender updates and possibly the cumulatives so I would want something that easily allows for that.

This is the longest I've ever kept a metered connection going - for 6 days now. Seems to work pretty well in blocking updates and allowing everything else to work ok. I can still easily update apps in the store manually. My plan was to remove the metered connection once I've hid the 1809 feature update but maybe I'll just keep it on since it seems everything is smooth going so far with it set to metered. I do use a local account and disable onedrive so I don't know if I would see some update issues if I used an M account and onedrive .

The tool i mentioned before still allows Defender Updates. It can be overridden temporarily for other updates.

In a perfect world MS would return WU to what it used to be. Updates would appear as a list with checkboxes, and nothing would download or install unless the user had chosen to update it. Perhaps someone will create a third-party solution to replace what we have now with an updater similar to what Windows 7 had?

Honestly, i'm often tempted to reinstall Windows 7 from my retail copy!

I just got : "intel corp system 8/22/2018 12:00:00 am 9.21.0.3755" offered to me in WU (show/hide tool) along with a windows defender update ... and like a retardo I installed it. I restarted as requested and when I came back up my realtek sound driver was gone and my Settings were acting weird when I tried to view the installation in history. Couldn't scroll and stuff.

So I Macrium'ed back to last nights image and I now have hid that intel thing whatever it is. I don't get much back on it from Google but i didn't really look hard - maybe a sound driver or microcode I don't know. I now have blocked driver updates. I prefer to get them directly from HP site if necessary anyway.
