I used to be able to backup registry in 7. Guess I haven’t done so in a long while. Used to be backed up when new installs were made. And we were admonished to back up registry before we made changes to it, but now it looks like backup is not reliable???

How did you do it in win7? Did you make System Image in Windows Backup app? Or some external backup app? Then yes, backup of registry files is included. Simple copying files from windows\system32\config folder is possible only if you boot other OS instance (for example, WinPE), otherwise files are opened and locked by SYSTEM.

Bree described where the problem lies... I don't care. Currently using 1709 & 1607 LTSB only. Will never use neither 1803 nor 1809.

This bug exists. The scheduled RegIdleBack task runs and shows the result 0x0 in Task Scheduler indicating success. However, nothing has been written to c:\Windows\System32\Config\Regback folder. This task worked correctly in 1709, but has not worked since 1803.

@dalchina and I have been studying this bug for the past month or so. This bug exists on every machine I have tested, be they x86 or x64 versions of 1803. Here's my report of the test results....

So Then why is MS even releasing These Builds?
I use MR to backup theses build but this is nuts. Maybe time to move on to Linux.

Beats me The only plausible theory dalchina and I can come up with is that MS regard the RegIdleBack task as unnecessary and have deprecated it.

Ha! Why not they have depreciated everything else it seems. So a third party Reg Backup would work? Maybe they are selling one in the Store.

That's probably a deprecated feature, not a bug..
Sorry Bud it seems I placed too much trust in MS.

I can't find the posts where members are talking about image viewers, because i'm having a Homer Simpson moment

So anyways, here is a viewer I enjoy, it's free, very lite, magnifies photos with the + - keys, and works with the arrow keys. Plus it has some nice options. ImageGlass - A lightweight, versatile image viewer

I've read it on MDL forum, that Windows keeps two reg backups *somewhere* in more streamlined fashion and this full registry backup functionality is deprecated in the recent builds starting with 1803. I'm not 100% sure about that though..

I installed my copy of EaseUS backup and made an image of my system today. I may even clone it, since it looks like MS is falling apart, and can't even communicate to people what to expect with 1809. It's been a month now and we're still in the dark. I just don't want to go back to 1803, yuk!
Yea, I think I'll get out one of my blue drives and clone it with 1809 for now.

Or replaced it with something else.

My theory is that the RegIdleBack scheduled task was related to 'Restore Last Known Good Configuration' - long gone. As such it's a relic. It can be reconfigured (new trigger) in 1709, but apparently not thereafter- nor can the task be manually run successfully.

About the only use of such a backup is where registry corruption has left a PC unbootable (and System Restore then will not work either), but an offline restoration from the backup then allows it to boot.

Clearly restoring such a backup is less than ideal because of the potential inconsistencies created, but of use in exceptional circumstances.

There are plenty of articles noting the use of this backup in this manner- MS has silently rendered them void.
@magilla There are 3rd party tools that do back up the registry, such as Tweaking.com's registry backup tool. But that is hardly useful when trying to help a user with an unbootable PC.

@sunberg - would be interesting to have that confirmed... if those backups exist, perhaps the files could be found- or a related scheduled task?
