I've been wondering the same thing for years. Defender's updating is puzzling -- it's once per day via WU auto check, but, if it updates on its own without a WU auto check, it still uses the WU mechanism. MS pushes Defender as a viable antivirus and I should think it should behave as one. Every third-party antivirus I know of will update through the platform every time a computer is on and new definitions come in. Defender doesn't check as often as they do and frequently, any number of definitions could be coming down before it does its thing.

And, FWIW, many people still have the 0x2 error for Defender automatic scans. That dates back to the Anniversary Update and MS has never fixed it. They just tell people to create their own scan task.

You can always create a task and check for updates as frequent as you desire, by just running the PowerShell command Update-MpSignature.....and not wait the Windows update. WD definitions come out very often, maybe more than 3-4 times a day, so you can always be up to date.

Very true and just as easy as doing a manual check every so often. Of course, the point is, do we really need to be doing that? Some AV programs check at configurable hourly intervals and years ago, when I used Norton (free from my ISP), it always updated when new definitions came out, regardless of whether it was within minutes or hours. I like Defender and have not had any major issues with it. However, I believe it could be made better.

I agree 100%. I'm also quite pleased with Windows Defender.
On the other hand, it definitely needs some improvements. It's not that hard to implement a scheduling feature, but the fact remains that we do have alternative ways to do it.
After all, I guess Microsoft has other priorities. For instance how to completely screw up a Feature Update!

It fails rarely but when it does I just update from WD directly, never fails from there.
