I have heard a lot of talk around certain circles that they will eventually just skip this feature update and move onto 1903 next year. That seems the most likely.
    Thanks for your reply Rocky.

Every year when the big new feature update is out I download the iso and do a clean install. A little complicated maybe for some, but I really feel fine with this as I like to debut on a nice clean install. This time due to problems we know, I did not go for the update and I am still running on 1803. I guess the wisest choice is to stick with 1803 for now and wait even if I am not concerned by the main problem which was files being missing as my C: will be formatted and nothing to loose on it when I install.

"Pay-per-Click Cloud OS", which is exactly what a lot of people predicted when W8 came out and they were laughed at and abused.

Since almost all businesses depend on it, the US Government should declare Windows to be "Public Domain".
That would leave 50%+ of the world out of it. Only in most advanced countries with most advanced Internet and financial system that could be achieved.

    Following my earlier feedback

    Feedback Hub - Windows Insider

I wondered what would happen if I tried a similar action (instead of repair upgrading 1809 as in feedback, I normal upgraded 1803) otherwise basically copying what feedback had done.

    1) Install 1803, put a test (test 1) file in c:\users\xyz\documents, and a different test file (test 2) in d:\mydocs

    2) Relocate c:\users\xyz\documents to d :\mydocs but leave test file in c:\users\xyz\documents

    3) Manually upgrade 1803 to 1809 using original 17763.1 iso. I allowed it to check for updates (I did this once before without checking for updates and file got deleted).

I DID NOT JOIN THE INSIDER PROGRAMME.

    Test 1 remained intact!

This did not install cumulative patches .17/.55.

So, it seems the patch is now unofficially working upgrading from an iso, provided you check for updates. The iso needs to be ugraded though to ensure it is robust.

The patch is obviously being applied at installation time. I always wondered what it was checking for as it never installed the cumulative updates clicking yes.

Finally, I got to upgrade my systems, and I'm happy to say; I didn't suffer from data loss. (Had my backups ready on an NAS to recover from it, but it wasn't needed. :) )

Although, two of my older devices didn't respond well to the upgrade. An old Toshiba laptop always hung after the first reboot, even after I manually updated all drivers in version 1803.

And an Acer Notebook became very slow after this upgrade. Even a clean install didn't help much.

So, those two were sent to retirement, by installing Linux Mint on them. :) This way, I can still use them for regular stuff, like surfing the net and working on documents. I'm one of those that don't use Microsoft Office, but always use LibreOffice on all my systems. :) So, switching to Linux Mint doesn't have much effect on my document handling. :)

I'm not really sad about this, because the Toshiba laptop came with a very recent released Windows Vista on it, so it survived the upgrades much longer than I had anticipated it would. :) And the Notebook, it came with Windows 7 Home but I mostly used that one to do administrative work on for my photography hobby. For registering the model's information on it, and stuff like that. That's something I still can do with Linux Mint on it. :)

So, in overall, I didn't have a too bad experience with 1809. My desktop PCs are working properly and my other, more recent, laptop, is also working fine with it. I sure like the better integration of the 'dark'-theme in this version.

    Hi folks

I thought current version of Windows (1803) was ver 17134.320 so a .1 version would be some updates behind or am I getting lost here somewhat.
