So if I clean install with the 1809 MCT and receive all 1809 patches/cumulative updates thereafter I should be fine right?
    Yes I believe so.

Alright I shall get organized. I'm not certain how necessary it is but there is a piece of mind with a clean install and having all drivers/programs freshly installed. I only hope that MS might reduce feature updates to maybe twice a year to reduce the hassle.

Have you checked the other method of moving user files....

    Attachment 208160
No but I would be surprised if the actual moving mechanism is any different i.e. this is just a different menu to do the same thing.

Just do a full backup and you're in the clear until next MS glitch.

I'm pretty well the IT guy for my family and friends. If I ask my friends what operating system they have on their PC, they say Windows. If I ask what version I get the deer in the headlights look. Need I say more. They are all running the stock install and more than likely saving everything to their desktop. They haven't the slightest idea how or why they should backup their stuff.
Presumably your IT toolkit includes a box of tissues... MS blue, of course..

I wonder whether they will bother to release a new one.
I think they have to upgrade the mct or iso that is downloaded, as the base iso 17763.1 deletes folders, and that this what you install, then get updates. As far as I can tell, the updates come towards the end of the installation process after your files have been processed (and hence deleted).

Feature updates are twice a year. It just seems more often because of all the hassle.

I've now gone back to ver 1803 (via good old Macrum Reflect). Having gotten this version to where I like it (reg hacks) 1809 totally reset the reg and screwed with notifications, like not working when ejecting USB drives. I have now deferred major updates for as long as possible. At least I won't have to put up with the total crap that MS calls a service. 1803 was de-laid now this fiasco with 1809, It seems that MS's attitude is " Let's just throw it it out and wait for the flack".

@Martin, in your tests on Hyper-V VM, did you check Windows.old folder after upgrading with 17663.55?

In my tests late night, the user profile folders in Windows.old were empty.

Just looked at windows.old, in the upgrade without the patch, and no downloads folder in the user folder.

That was the only one with a file.

I am redoing the patch version (to create an iso). I will check that.
