    Well, this is really interesting.

I have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that KFR is at least one cause of data loss.

    Two cases tested:

CASE 1 - Upgrading without new patch to 17763.1

1803 clean installed, and then KFR set up :

test1 in c:\users\m\documents (not transferred when doing KFR)

test2 in e:\docs (redirected folder location)

Upgraded to 17763.1, and test1 is deleted. test2 in e:\docs was not deleted.

CASE 2 - Upgrading with patch to 17763.17/55 (can't remember which off top of my head)

Same start position as above. Here I joined the SLOW RING and updated via Windows Update

In this case, neither test1 or test2 was deleted.

Unfortunately I deleted that VM to post an image, but I could reproduce it if people were not convinced.

    CONCLUSION

KFR is certainly a reason for data loss.

The new fix does not delete the data on C drive.

So for me, I am now personally convinced the KFR problem is fixed.

Whether there are other issues, I have no idea of course.

Yes, that is clear. KFR is ONE reason for this. But, as I have mentioned earlier in this thread, two out of four of my contacts who requested my assistance because of 1809 upgrade had deleted their files were using pure, default folder locations, not a single folder location ever changed, have never used OneDrive, and both have never even had a Microsoft account.

BTW, on a totally other matter: I was also thinking to unsubscribe this thread, but because I have nothing against reading opinions that oppose mine, I decided to continue subscribing it.

I wonder if this 1809 FUBAR will give MS pause to rethink the decontenting of things like FileHistory and System Image backup. I may be very old school, but I never worked with an OS that didn't provide its own backup and recovery functions for users to benefit from using. I'm also old school enough to not prefer putting my information into the "cloud". That's why there are multiple disconnected hard drives on my system for backups.
    What does 'decontenting' mean?

    Think he means deprecating.

I think 'deprecating' is possibly the intent.

I'm not a betting man, but System Image and Windows Backup, under 'Backup and Restore (Windows 7)' will stay around at least until the last vestiges of W7 users have become but a tiny spike in the statistical flatline. So Q1 2021 would be my bet.

File History has moved to Settings, as has Disk Cleanup Tool under the guise of 'Storage|Free Up Space Now'.

Ah, that makes more sense. Has File History been deprecated - seems it was there last time I checked (I make my own backup arrangements).

    Sure - I said A case.

In fact, I am now thinking there might be other reasons but MS have ONLY IDENTIFIED KFR as a root cause.

MS are taking an enormous commercial gamble if they reissue and data is still lost.

In the end, the buck ultimately stops at the top of the development team. A certain young lady must be feeling the heat!

File History is not a deprecated feature. The System Image Backup function is a deprecated feature although very little has been said about that for quite a while.

System Image Backup still works so well and is so simple. It's just there, wanting to be used. It's sad to think it might be removed. I restored my 1803 Backup with it just this week A really fast and painless job.
