What I was trying to say (unclearly it seems) polls have been run on sites and the answers are so inconclusive as to be meaningless.

Problem with this issue, you have to be getting responses from literally thousands of people, and most polls only get maybe ten - 20 replies. So if one in a hundred thousand replies, one could end up believing one out of ten people get this issue.

In the end, I believe the issue is quite rare even if a user is doing KFR.

Is MS right or not - they get lots of telemetry?
Does that help MS work out the scale of the issue - I guess we will never know?

I am trying a test where I install 1803, set up KFR and upgrade using an iso created before .17 fix (which I also tested and it worked fine but again does that prove anything unless we know or sure every KFR case fails consistently (which I seriously doubt)).

In the end, it is all verbal semantics - an issue has been identified and fixed but is it the only cause?

The problem now is that even if just one person in the world loses data for a totally different reason, the Media will blow it up far out of proportion as they never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
    Telemetry may not include that.

They were all gifts. The one I'm using right now is a MacbookPro2,1 from late 2006. C2D with 3GB RAM.

    1809 works fine.
Nice one... or three and the Think Pad

It seems that MS has already released a fix for the data deletion bug to members of the insider program. Also a new servicing stack update KB4465477 will be required:

    I think you are right.

At the moment even the IT media don't much care as there are much more interesting things. FaceBook, Google+ shutdown, Tax etc.

If there is a pause they will pick it up though.

You can decide if you believe it or not, I just happened on the video while on my XBOX.

    Image backups

I have friends who moved user data to drive D from their system drive C: to make room instead of buying a bigger drive. When they backup drive C: on to D, including image backups, I ask them where they're putting user data on drive D? I usually get a duh. They go out and buy a USB drive and use that for their backups. I think they would've been better off getting a bigger drive C leaving all of their user data there. Use of an external drive is a great way to go though if you're not too lazy to use it. I've looked at backups on external drives before and the backups are usually old because of pure laziness. I personally back my data up to 4 places once a week. Before I retired from a mega huge company I did many jobs and one of them was installing a tape management system (TMS or TLMS) on IBM mainframes that included backups for offsite. I used the prefix in DSN's to determine where the tapes went. In a catastrophe like fire you can never be safe unless you're using offsite storage like the one provided by Microsoft although in my case I have over 100 gig to back up every week on just one of my machines. I like image copies the best and separate copies of files in case I want to do a clean installation of the OS. I have an image backup of 4 machines in a bank savings deposit box that I rotate. I have too many memories that would make me too sad to lose.

2nd thought - Did someone in the Windows Insider Program complain to the feedback hub that Microsoft was leaving duplicate files on drive C: and that started the fiasco that a lot of people are confused about? I thought insiders had access to the build 17763.1 MS released. I'm sure I did. And I saw MS ignored the feedback about it because there weren't enough complaints . Now you can prioritize problems submitted to the feedback hub but it will be interesting if the honor system will work in this case.

Private data is most valuable part, got to keep it safe. MS has placed it in very vulnerable spot.
And it's your choice and responsibility to protect your private data. Whether stash it somewhere else or not, the first order of business is to backup, backup, backup!
