Wynona thank you for this. I keep feeling like everyone is just bashing Microsoft for every problem that existed before this build and may not be Microsoft's fault. I think that we are here to make 'constructive' commentary and provide information via Feedback Hub that enables correction of problems. We all have a choice - to be a member of the Insider group, or to not be a member!
Spot on, Magilla. I'm not perfect, you're not perfect, novices are not perfect and Microsoft is certainly not perfect.
We, as consumers, must learn how to use Windows 10; not only how to secure and protect our data, resolve problems, but to take responsibility for our own failures. Failing that, we need to know when and where to take the computer to get problems resolved. 
IOW, we must realize that our mistakes are ours and don't belong at Microsoft's front door.
Finally, I think Microsoft learned a valuable lesson . . . they should not have released to the general public before we Insiders had a final looksee . . .

While I am not an insider and I am pretty new to this forum… I have been involved with computing since 1979 when I got my TI99-4A. I won’t go into details on the rest of my involvement for almost 40 years but let’s just say there has been plenty. From my own business to working for a major computer manufacturer.
My files are on my SSD C: drive but I also sync every day to my D: drive and two externals. I do this every evening but if I am involved with something important I sync immediately and again at the end of the day.
I also perform a system image backup every day. A Full every Friday and Differentials every day in between the Fulls. Those are kept in the same fashion as the syncs, D: drive and two externals. Images are done before “anything” major, like upgrading to 1809.
You may call it overkill but I sleep easy and don’t worry about hacking, viruses, or my own blunders. You can’t be too cautious in my book.
I really appreciate the input from folks like Brink, Wynona, and many others on this forum.

I know it seems like overkill to some, but to me these are logical practices that were drilled into my head—and obviously yours—and today with all the ransomeware threat and other threats, it is even more important. Thank you for sharing your routine.

Private data is most valuable part, got to keep it safe. MS has placed it in very vulnerable spot.

Thanks magilla, I have seen some very good info from you also.
Perhaps one of these days and probably in another thread, I will share some of the other safeguards that I employ to ensure safety on the net. Preventing the need to utilize the recovery of those images and files... except for the self-blunders of course are the best route.

That is the whole point in this. Microsoft should never touch / manipulate user data, Windows feature upgrade has no reason to touch user data.

I think everyone is getting a little over excited about a problem that's affected a tiny proportion of users and one that would affect them anyway if they do not really exercise good file management and backup procedures.
I don't change the default folders because I like my Windows as near default as possible, as I do software.
You can argue it's insecure or dangerous or whatever all you like but I have hit the issue with either dividing disks up (you lose all partitions in the event of a failure), not having the choice of adding disks (laptops) having to move the partitions if your sizing requirements change, etc.
I didn't change anything, I do use One Drive for convenience, but nothing mission critical.
I haven't been affected by the code this time around. I think the issue is not the specific bug but the amount of bad decisions that are cropping up on the OS development side and the nightmare that is patching.
There are too many active builds, feature updates should revert to annually; there is nothing in the bi-annual releases that would suffer from being delayed until they worked properly or to actually provide something substantial to see a measurable change. This bi-annual cadence is the problem.
Totally agree!. I am on your side for this one. I remember in the hey days of Win 7, there were those for and against placing your users' folders on a separate drive (like D:\) each with some compelling arguments. I never like to put my user folders on a separate drive, considering the speed with which Win 10 is changing. If anyone has any concern about loosing some important folders, I would say that's why we have file history (cloud storage) and a good backup plan. That was just my two cents' worth..

Not only not to touch it but also give more protection since they obviously think that's a good place for it. Maybe not to extent of some Linux distros requiring password for data deletion but at least higher level of warning or an extra step for verification of intent to delete files from those supposedly protected folders.
This situation may have been one off accident but not a week passes when somebody doesn't come to me for help about missing "important" files deleted or misplaced by user.

No one can say with absolute certainty and with strong evidence that what Microsoft said about the number of affected users is not correct, those who say that are based only on conjecture, speculation and opinions and not on a large-scale investigation.
Totally agree.
Every poll I have seen has not had any significant responses to suggest it is really a wide scale issue.
In many cases, I suspect the data loss is down to more mundane reasons e.g. an upgrade that has crapped out, drive is failing, PEBCAK etc.
On other sites, I see a lot of MS bashing going on with no evidence to really support things. Even here on a normally rational site people are overreacting (imo).
So come on guys and gals - lets get a sense of perspective and work on hard proven facts which has always been the trademark of this forum.
Lets not degenerate into R**D*T type of forum.
