Windows 10 October 2018 Update rollout now paused

I do not undertand one thing in the new FDR blog.

"Today we take the next step towards the re-release of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update by providing the updated version to our Windows Insider community."

How can we install the new updated version as a new later Insider version has been released?

Also, anybody who has had issues has already lost the data, and the fix is no use for those who did not lose data. So who can test it? How can MS get any significant feedback?

The only way I can see to do this is if we all set up test cases with FDR, and the fix is included in the next Insider build.

I guess they are taking care of insiders who have not had the time to upgrade to 1809 yet.

Possibly because a higher percentage of your contacts would have known about and used your tutorial?

This occurred if Known Folder Redirection (KFR) had been previously enabled...

    From the same Insider blog:
This "KFR" explanation is not true. I myself have relocated the complete Users folder with Sysprep on all devices past 12 years, since early beta versions of Vista. I had nothing deleted on the on the one and only device I have on official GA release, with relocated Users folder, which I upgraded last week.

Quoting myself on another site today:

I can only say that two out of those four of my contacts requesting help have never used OneDrive and do not use nor have any Microsoft accounts. Their Windows 10 installs are default pre-installs, not a single folder is redirected or moved. In their cases, all the reasons Microsoft is claiming to have caused this issue are not true.

Relocated Users folder has nothing to do with this issue.

I'm using the reg tweak on 1803.

I'm not updating until this is fixed. Do you think when they adopted the new context menus that it was deliberate to have Grey highlights? It seems strange to me that they no longer use the user defined accent colours. Almost as if they forgot to add that, right? The Grey is what you normally get when a highlighted link is not in focus, as in the 'This PC' link in my Explorer screenshot:

I agree with Kari that the KFR expanation is not the whole picture.

I have tested several times with a test image which contained files in Documents, Desktop, Downloads etc. I made a note of the size of these folders and number of files. I also have a few personal folders on the root of my C drive - these folders contains approximately 103,000 files in about 50gb.

On all ocassions, I applied the October 1809 update from a USB within Windows.

When I checked after restoring the images, those MS folders (Documents, Music, Videos etc) remained largely remained intact, but my other personal folders reduced to around 98,000 files (and missing around 300 folders) and is around 15gb lighter!

So I decided to copy these affected folders to another drive / partition on the same disk and lo & behold, the properties report the original number of files, folders and size!!

I've narrowed it down the the affected folder, but there's only a difference of a few thousand files over approx 5gb.

    Something's not quite right!
