This is probably heresy, but my fix was to return every part of my MS world back to 1803 until it is all sorted out. I have too much on my main box to risk whatever else may pop up. I will wait...again. Just my way, not suggesting anyone should do it.
I upgraded my pc, my wife's pc and two laptops and had no files deleted on any of them, guess I was lucky.

Not alone. I updated 3 pc from the update and one using MCT. All run great and a little faster than the previous version.This 'loss of files' thing must be due to a certain type of system configuration or software conflict. I have 10 PCs loaded with 1809, none of them are new (some are circa 2007) but ALL upgraded without issues or data loss. For the records, most were upgraded via Windows Update but one machine refused to find it this way and I used the online 'update this PC' tool for this one.
I have to add that 1809 does feel 'snappier' in use than 1803. All of which means that I actually approve of this version but I realise I may be alone....
Version 1809 has a problem with the screen brightness on the laptop, when restarted, the brightness itself moved to 50%.
Had the same problem with screen brightness where it was reduced to approximately 50% and it was fixed by a manual adjustment.
So, because it's been pulled back, if I were to manually check Windows Updates like I do every month to get the monthly cumulative update on MY time, will I also get the 1809 upgrade? Or has it been pulled from EVERYWHERE and you can't get it anymore through manually checking via Windows update?
I just wanna know if clicking check for updates in the upcoming monthly CU will be in fact triggering a landmine.
Same here. Plus it changed the auto color pick of backgrounds making my Firefox much darker in the title bar area. Also 1809 seems slower plus showed an ad in the Settings area with all add/tips settings disabled. I moved back to 1803 (via Macrium saved image from day before) and everything is great again. Definitely faster and smoother. I'm kind of glad this happened in a way. I keep saying to myself I'm going to wait 2-3 months before upgrading to the latest feature update but I usually one way or another always get it early. No more of that for me. I think its just a matter of time before one of these every 6 month feature updates (by a company focused on the cloud) does real damage (not to dismiss people who have lost files with 1809 ... that's terrible) and I've now got the Windows 10 feature update life cycle fact sheet in front of me and will keep these dates in mind with updates.
