Proof that big companies ignore all feedback. Really I stopped wasting my time leaving feedback for all the big companies not just Microsoft but Google and Apple because they never listen to most complaints. I only leave feedback for small open source software like on Github and you know what they listen and actually fix the issues.

As for this horrible update. I just rolled it back using Macruim after using the Craptober update and everything is faster from loading programs to even typing this tread. I did not notice how un-polished this latest update is. To the glaring ugly dark explorer that even an 5 year old could tell there were graphical errors to general slowness on my beefy fast gaming PC with a SSD. I am glad I did not install it on my mothers old slow clunker PC.

1809 is working fine on my system. I see no reason to back out to 1803. I'm having none of the errors reported here.

Contrary to popular opinion I do not move my personal off the C: drive. I see no reason to. Macrium backs up my data just as well as it backs up the OS. I do have a lot of other stuff on other drives and partitions but all my dynamic stuff (documents, pictures, music, etc) is on my SSD boot drive. Macrium does a weekly differential backup to a 2nd internal 2TB drive and I have Mirror Folder running all the time to backup my data to folders on another 2TB drive.

I don't understand why people think it's so important to separate data from the OS. As I said, Macrium backs it all up just fine and it only takes me 20 minutes or so to restore my SSD boot drive.

I do agree the most important thing to do is backup, backup, backup.

If I already have the media creation tool for 1809, is it safe to fresh install it or should I wait for a patch?
If you just have the media creation tool for 1809 but haven't run it yet then you are out of luck. When run it first checks to see if it is up to date and will not work now as it isn't the current version (1803 is). But if you have already run the MCT to make the ISO or USB install media then that will still work.

FWIW, those of us who have survived the upgrade intact are in general not reporting significant problems. The problem of files going missing only seems to happen during an upgrade, so a clean install should be safe. But as it is 'Patch Tuesday' on the 9th, it would be safest of all to wait and see what patches may be issued.

Luckily, I use a program called Bvacup 2 which backs up my Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, etc.up to my External Drive E continually. I can just copy them back to Drive C if they are missing. It happened with Documents, but that's all I have found missing. This is rather scary, maybe MS is celebrating Halloween early!

I don't seem to have any problems with my update on 3 pc's. I have never kept documents, pictures or videos on my OS drive, They are on separate drives pointed to with shortcuts on OS drive. All are still where they are supposed to be and all are still backed up on my One Drive. I did not however update any of the pc's with WU. I did UUP download and did the updates via ISO.

I noticed a big performance hit with 1809. I think there will be a new build not a Cumulative update as 1809 is so unpolished.

No difference in performance here x 3 PC's. Anything wrong can easily be fixed by a cumulative update.

Then all you have to work with is grpedit. Do you remember how you disabled them the last time?
    No
I can show you some settings that might help, but you're going to have to go here: Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet for Windows 10 v1803 to get the list of settings; Then create a new thread in that System Security forum and point me to it, I'm tired of high-jacking this thread.

This article from a couple of days ago recommends Recuva to try and recover lost files:
Did you upgrade to Win10 1809 and lose all of your documents and pictures? There’s a fix for that. | Computerworld
