I am sorry - I cannot entirely agree.
It is certainly possible MS are doing a smokescreen. However, I have googled it, and most responses I see are ambiguous and either MS are lying, or there are many other mundane reasons for data loss.
It is just as likely that this has always been happening and people are just jumping on a bandwagon at the moment. In fact most cases, I see predate the KFR explanation. I have yet to see any REAL evidence i.e. people saying "Ah - yes! That was exactly my situation".
As usual, the real truth is probably somewhere in the middle i.e. greater than MS claim but lower than the media is hyping things up to be. WE WILL NEVER KNOW.
You can talk about it for sure (that is entirely your right and I would not presume to censor you) but in the end, it seems to me we are in "Leap of Faith" territory.I just cannot see any way we can get reliable statistics or adequate explanations (sounds just like Brexit to me - lol)
I know one thing for absolute certainty. I have tested the new version and it did not delete my data.
I suggest all Insider regulars clean install 1803 in a VM, put a file or two in the documents folder, then do KFR but do not transfer the files, and then upgrade to 1809 and see if it works fine for them. Then at least as a community we can say we have actively done our bit to verify the new build. Of course, this takes effort but as Insiders, I think it is incumbent on us to do our bit on such an important issue.
I am currently do the same as above with an offline upgrade to 1803 with an original 1809 iso to see if that fails due to KFR. If so, I will at least be personally convinced the fix is working. If it does not fail, I am sort of back to square one - wondering if the KFR explanation is just a smokescreen which I fully accept is a distinct possibility but have no way of proving.
Realistically, we need thousands, or even tens of thousands to do this to provide any statistically meaningful feedback to MS and that just ain't gonna happen.
Ultimately, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. It is only by MS taking a CALCULATED risk and putting it back out there and see if we get any complaints. I guarantee some people WILL lose data but not necessarily for KFR alone. MS are in a big hole politically and they are in a total no win situation now.
