Overreacting? Just to be sure I understand you correctly, people who lost their data because a mistake Microsoft made are overreacting?

I have been a Microsoft fanboy as long as I can remember. I have used each and every Windows version since end of 1985 when Windows 1.0 was released (exception: never used WinME), both consumer versions and all Windows Server versions. I have loved Windows since that, never had any issues with Vista, was extremely happy with 8 & 8.1, and now I am as much a Windows 10 fanboy as you can be. I simply love it.

But: For me, loving Microsoft products in general and Windows 10 in particular does not mean a motto "Let's only speak nicely about Windows". Microsoft and Windows Insider team caused something that should never happen, and we should be allowed to discuss about it.

Microsoft, or rather Insider team released information about this in so downplaying and blatant way that it simply cannot be true, and if you Google and Bing a bit, you will see it by yourself.

OK, let's first look at that "at just two days into the rollout when we paused". A small mistake but downplaying starts here: the 1809 was pulled back just before midnight CEST on Friday the 5th, three days after it was released on the 2nd.

Next, one single thread on Microsoft Answers. On Thursday the 4th, late evening CEST, 110 users on that thread had clicked I have the same question. At the moment 853 user have clicked that:

    Attachment 208105

Let's play a game "Thinking is allowed". Let's assume that each and every user around the globe who lost their data would have clicked I have the same question on that page, no more users losing anything. According to Windows Insider team, accepting their figures that about 0.01% of those who upgraded lost their data, it would mean that 8,530,000 users had done the upgrade and 853 lost their files.

Do you really think it is credible? Have you ever heard Microsoft pulling an upgrade back if only 0.01% for users are affected?

In any case, the real number is of course much higher. As I mentioned earlier, just Google and Bing it.

I will continue voicing my opinion and demanding Microsoft and Windows Insider team to produce a credible explanation about something that they really screwed up, something that should never happen, and had never happened in this scale if they would have released Release Preview ring upgrade at least a few days before releasing the GA version.

If that is overreacting and you think I should not talk about it, I must disappoint you by telling that I will continue posting about it until the issue will be completely resolved and credible explanation given.

I am sorry - I cannot entirely agree.

It is certainly possible MS are doing a smokescreen. However, I have googled it, and most responses I see are ambiguous and either MS are lying, or there are many other mundane reasons for data loss.

It is just as likely that this has always been happening and people are just jumping on a bandwagon at the moment. In fact most cases, I see predate the KFR explanation. I have yet to see any REAL evidence i.e. people saying "Ah - yes! That was exactly my situation".

As usual, the real truth is probably somewhere in the middle i.e. greater than MS claim but lower than the media is hyping things up to be. WE WILL NEVER KNOW.

You can talk about it for sure (that is entirely your right and I would not presume to censor you) but in the end, it seems to me we are in "Leap of Faith" territory.
I just cannot see any way we can get reliable statistics or adequate explanations (sounds just like Brexit to me - lol)

I know one thing for absolute certainty. I have tested the new version and it did not delete my data.
I suggest all Insider regulars clean install 1803 in a VM, put a file or two in the documents folder, then do KFR but do not transfer the files, and then upgrade to 1809 and see if it works fine for them. Then at least as a community we can say we have actively done our bit to verify the new build. Of course, this takes effort but as Insiders, I think it is incumbent on us to do our bit on such an important issue.

I am currently do the same as above with an offline upgrade to 1803 with an original 1809 iso to see if that fails due to KFR. If so, I will at least be personally convinced the fix is working. If it does not fail, I am sort of back to square one - wondering if the KFR explanation is just a smokescreen which I fully accept is a distinct possibility but have no way of proving.

Realistically, we need thousands, or even tens of thousands to do this to provide any statistically meaningful feedback to MS and that just ain't gonna happen.

Ultimately, the proof of the pudding is in the eating. It is only by MS taking a CALCULATED risk and putting it back out there and see if we get any complaints. I guarantee some people WILL lose data but not necessarily for KFR alone. MS are in a big hole politically and they are in a total no win situation now.

Just the fact that all on here are savvy to what can happen. What about those who don't? They're not lazy to do backups as they just don't know why they need to or even how to. They bought a licence to run Windows and that's it, I repeat that a lot, if not most, windows users, are totally ignorant of backing up their data.
Who is to blame for that?

Android, Apple etc are no better at educating people.

MS could nag people until the end of time to back up data, and people will just complain about being nagged!

I personally find it hard to believe cases of users with 100's of GBs of data being ignorant of the need to backup as they are usually fairy experienced users to accumulate that but hey common sense is an oxymoron.

Since this thread has turned into a blamefest against Microsoft, with those who have an open mind being ignored, I think I'll just unsubscribe.

Almost every post for the last couple of days have talked about this KFR phenomenon, it would be hard to miss if you even read a couple of posts from the last few days.

Yes, I know that. Thing is people have been going on and on that you should not leave your files in the default location. If you watch the video I linked too, its the people that have moved their files that are getting hit with the lost files. Not the ones that used the stock locations. If what he says is correct?

I wonder if this 1809 FUBAR will give MS pause to rethink the decontenting of things like FileHistory and System Image backup. I may be very old school, but I never worked with an OS that didn't provide its own backup and recovery functions for users to benefit from using. I'm also old school enough to not prefer putting my information into the "cloud". That's why there are multiple disconnected hard drives on my system for backups.
