If this has already been posted my apologies. Only just got up and catching up on all the news.
Microsoft reveals causes and extent of Windows 10 October 2018 Update File Deletion bug - MSPoweruser
    Quote from the referenced link:

When the October 2018 Update was installed the original “old” folder was deleted including the files in that folder (in this example c:\users\username\documents would be deleted; d:\documents, the new location, would be preserved).
The most important aspect of any type of system is data. How did this shady programming pass code review? And even if this passed the code review, how did it pass Q/A or Q/C?

This certainly proves that the "Insider Review and/or Beta testers are not a replacement for MS internal Q/A or Q/C. Alternatively, the feedback hub isn't taken seriously by MS, where releasing the latest version of Candy Crush receives higher priorities, than some people participating in the previews reporting data loss. For the latter ones, the generic advise of always backup your data and system, or just do a fresh install are the accepted norm.

This article from about four years ego pretty much foreshadowed this type of issues:

Dirk Gently , looks like its definitly not supported ( possible) anymore !
Im afraid we have to live with this ugly contextmenu , in 1809 , untill some fix will arrive ..........
I decided not to roll-back for this problem only , coz all is working very good .

btw; its no difference , clean install or upgrade , the Classic Context Menu is killed by MS........( thanks !)
You saw the Reddit thread i posted before? Seems like a dev took interest there. I suggest adding your voice to that discussion. Both to have the reg tweak re-enabled, and to petition MS to add back user defined accents to context menus.

I do not undertand one thing in the new FDR blog.

"Today we take the next step towards the re-release of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update by providing the updated version to our Windows Insider community."

How can we install the new updated version as a new later Insider version has been released?

Also, anybody who has had issues has already lost the data, and the fix is no use for those who did not lose data. So who can test it? How can MS get any significant feedback?

The only way I can see to do this is if we all set up test cases with FDR, and the fix is included in the next Insider build.

    Hi,

Sorry but... what setup menu? I didn't saw any menu during upgrading/installation. The only thing I saw were the %s rolling by and I never saw one settings menu. Or is it just during a clean install?
Sorry I may have mixed things up. I did a clean install on another PC right after doing the upgrade.
My original 1803 setup was with the "only store files locally on this PC" and it stayed that way after the upgrade to 1809, and no lost files. And my moved user folders retained their moved location.

It was to Release Preview Ring only. It was at 17763.1. Now at 17763.17 or 17763.55, depending on which confusing path you took. Dona assures us if you did the .55, you got the .17. Fast and Skippy are toddling along at 18252, oblivious to the mayhem behind. Slow Ring is wherever it is, don't care! According to the MS in-the-knows, when RP gets the blessing (fatality rate below .01%), a new and improved 1809 will hit the streets. I am on 1803, deferred for 30 days. Film at 11................
I'm on RP-Ring and got 17763.55 way before 17763.17 got released. Other computers are on Fast Ring and 18252.1000 ages ago.

So this 17763.17 makes absolutely no sense to me. There's no one left to test it unless clean installing or reverting back to 17763.1 on a VM.

I guess they are taking care of insiders who have not had the time to upgrade to 1809 yet.
Yeah but they would skip ahead to 18252 unless Slow Ring /RP.

    Smells fishy to me.

That's why they unconfused the confusion with more MSology.....

And after the lay-offs, what's the betting they relied heavily on "Peer Reviews" instead of dedicated Testers?
I did mention earlier that MS (UK) paid professional Contract Testers (like me) somewhat less than the market rate!
