Everyone I know, young and old, uses both words for specific purposes, and knows what they mean. Honestly, the differences are not that great between UK and US English. Except, of course, when they are.

Seriously, the Brits use 'our' where we Murkins use 'or' (colour, color), and 're' where we use 'er' (theatre, theater). It doesn't exactly overturn your world when you run into it. There are various colourful expressions for various things that are local, but...

There are at least as great differences within the UK and US, and somehow we carry on, more or less.

What little I've seen seems to suggest its not related to what your talking about. Its an issue with syncing too or from OneDrive and the Files on Demand feature.
I think that is not correct.

I have heard about and know several users who do not even have a Microsoft account and do not use OneDrive at all who lost their data.

    Just one example:

I got a call today from a friend, a stonemason who has three shops in different corners of the city for both his art and gravestones. On Friday, a few hours before 1809 was pulled back, he started the upgrade before going home. He went to office on Saturday, everything seemed to be OK and he shut down the PC. It is usually on from Monday mornings to Friday evenings, shut down for the weekends.

Booting up his office PC this morning, absolutely everything was gone from Documents folder. Bills, marketing material, and so on.

This user has never had an MS account, nor has he used OneDrive.

Hmmm, I'm not using OneDrive for the most part; I have some old files on it, but have been keeping my files on my Data drive.
Me too. The only syncing going on for me is "from" my Public folder to my PC(s). Like if I upload a picture from my desktop, then later on log into my laptop. If I go to my Public OneDrive folder in file explorer, it syncs any missing files from OneDrive to my laptop. The pictures I uploaded from my desktop PC earlier. Nothing is ever deleted from my OneDrive unless I actually delete it manually, right click delete in the actual OneDrive Folder in file explorer.

That makes some sense and could be why I did not have a problem. I do not use OneDrive at all.
I have never used OneDrive think I have it turned off. I use Macrium and back up every couple days using the auto full backup method.

Thats good to know, I guess. Good info, just doesn't help with what's going on? For me anyway. I'm no expert but I'm even more confused now?

The standard limited storage isn't enough, IMHO, to entice most people to make any kind of good use out of Onedrive. I find it handy to post links to pictures on forums. Or even a link to multiple pictures, like so, Microsoft OneDrive - Access files anywhere. Create docs with free Office Online. You just right click and select share a OneDrive link. It's also handy to post a link in an e-mail etc to a file you want to share with somebody and not compromise your PC. It's in the cloud. It does have its uses.

I must first stress the fact that what I am going to say now is my own, subjective and very personal opinion. I have no factual proof to back my words.

My only point is and was that rumours about OneDrive being a culprit for this are just that. Rumours. I would not be surprised if first one suggesting it online (not referring to you, referring to where this rumour started) would be one of those "MS is spying, don't use cloud" geeks.

I have been privately contacted by four friends by phone and email since Saturday, asking what to do because personal data is gone. Two of them I know to be MS account and OneDrive users, two of them have a standing order for tinfoil on Amazon to be sure they always have a nice tinfoil hat because "Microsoft does this and that, I do not trust them". The stonemason I mentioned is one of these two.

I am happy that only four friends of mine lost the data, as far as I know, but the point here is that out of these four, two are users who would never sign up for a Microsoft account, who would not even think about using OneDrive.

In my opinion, and based on what I have read online and heard from these people, OneDrive is not the culprit.

I do as well and even if I lost files, I could retrieve them from an MR Image. To install anything like a CU or a Feature Update, it would be foolish not to use MR first.
