But I have already upgraded and so have millions of others. I will not go back to 1803 and start over.
I survived the update intact on all four machines I updated. No files went 'missing'. Seems the number of those affected may be a small fraction of those that updated (though obviously devastating if you are in that group).

Windows 10 1809 update deleted all files from Documents - Microsoft Community
I have subsequently had to take one machine back to its 1803 image, though that was nothing to do with 'missing files'. That was down to a networking problem in its Hyper-V WiFi network switch. While the host machine worked perfectly on the Internet and with two-way communication with the VMs, the host machine couldn't write to shares on other physical machines on the network (but it could read from them perfectly). With Hyper-V removed it had no problems though.

Very easy to criticise companies for this type of thing -- although in this case the Q.A definitely wasn't up to even amateur standard. !!
I think though if anybody has ever had experience of working on large projects an often overlooked part of the process is in Regression testing -- that basically means while fixing a defect or adding something new a past defect can re-appear -- anybody experienced in large projects - not only Windows but SAP etc have experienced this either as a user or developer / tester.
That's a big failing in modern I.T systems -- some of the younger people I've seen either don't know what it means or haven't a clue how to test it.

Which is why companies should have (often required by law) standard precedures and regulations in place to avoid these kinds of disasters from happening.
I've only been on Windows 10 for less than a year. SInce then on 3 different systems, I have had one major problem after the next with Windows 10 updates. It is one of the main reasons I held off for so long and why others continue to do so.
The only way to get information is to come to places like this (or currently turn on the news) I bet MS know exactly what the cause is and could alleviate a lot of concerns by being transparent rather than just advising people not to use their computers and wait to see if and when another update comes along. Instead they seem to have the attitude that they "OWN" all of our computers and can do what they like.

I'm not even sure a patch to the OS would fix this. It seems to be Setup that deletes the files during the upgrade, not the OS itself once running...
Yes, it looks like Setup thing, but there may be more factors involved, maybe Storage Sense bug..

I am not having those issues. It seems that MS released this way too soon. They could not wait another week? Hopefully we will find out what they are going to do tomorrow. Do all the backups while you can.

whether it's Politics, business or whatever --
It's not "Committing the sin" or making mistakes --it's the cover up that gets them in the end.
Ms would have a lot more sympathy etc if it just said --OK we hosed this one up --something wasn't quite right here - whether internal procedures, leaks so product had to be released before time or just management that wasn't totally up to the task rather than just pull the thing with almost zero explanation of what went wrong.
Sins are always found out in the end -- heads roll usually not because of the original error but because of the cover up afterwards. These days with so many people always 100% connected to internet it's almost impossible to hide anything -- if you want to broadcast anything world wide - simply tell the C.I.A. a secret !!

Lots of theory's by those triaging it on Answers. No real official confirmation of anything from Microsoft though. Not that I saw. Wouldn't I like to be a fly on the wall in Redmond a few hours from now. It still early there, 5:30 AM I think. Likely a few employee's that didn't get much sleep too.

I expect this was all a result of the top brass wanting to announce this during their October event.
Maybe they will release a CU to prevent this from happening in future updates. Or you can install a new update over your existing 1809. Either way I don't see it as a big deal except to those who lost files.

There are more than just lost file issues. I didn't lose any files but my upgrade was crippled with performance issues. Had to roll back to 1803 to get a usable system again. And next to no Internet on the one system I did a clean install on. WIFI just stops connecting. My network is listed, won't connect. Reboot and its fine, for a little while. Then it just randomly drops the connection again. Same exact hardware that was fine running 1803.

Same here I noticed a performance hit with 1809. If it were to come out again I will wait until it gets pushed to WU.
