    Hi there

perhaps it's time for Ms to end slow / fast / all the other "Lord of the rings" stuff and just release one update as alpha / beta etc where people can download and use at will with the caveat that beta / alpha testing is just that --testing and things will break.

There really isn't any point IMO in having all these builds running concurrently -- If I were running development labs I'd have an alpha, a beta and an eventual RTM and once the alpha has been replaced by the beta then that alpha should be halted / withdrawn etc. There's no reason why beta builds can't be beta1/2 etc same as the alpha - but once alpha has gone to beta then just shut the thing down.

It's just plain bonkers doing it the way Ms does it now. Is there also any value in having Skippy builds unless you are going to make radical changes - then IMO it should be called Windows 11 or 12 or whatever.

Just my thoughts on this whole process.

    Cheers

Usually when a build is released to the Fast and Slow Ring at the same time its an RTM. Maybe not this build but I expect any new build to follow until they have squashed the remaining bugs. Of course, that does not guarantee that immediately after they release there won't be another forced update to fix something else.
Marty, I watched the webcast a couple days ago, and the Fast and Slow Rings were discussed. It was brought up that the Slow Ring had been neglected, but they're working on rectifying the situation and releasing more Builds to the Slow Ring. Also, the two Rings weren't released the same day; I believe the Slow Ring release was a couple days after the Fast Ring.

The "word on the street" is that 17763 will be released to Release Preview Ring on 25th September, which makes sense as that is last Tuesday in month (although Tuesday releases are not set in ablets of stone).

Right clicking to get context menu while on desktop is so laggy. The cursor spins for a good second or more before the menu pops up. Anyone else having this issue as it is definitely annoying?

    Try https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shexview.html
Select and Disable everything temporarily to see, if it helps.
If it does, enable one by one to find out, which one is causing the trouble.

So I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade my 1803 installation to this 1809 version.

No problem, I think - how wrong could be.

First, I did disk cleanup etc, disabled defender, unplugged external drive etc.

    1) Tried to install via WU - downloaded etc, then after it booted, stopped at installing 12% rebooting instantly with no error message, and undid changes.

    2) Tried to update manually by mounting iso and running setup.exe - same failure.

    3) Imported current install into a Hyper-V VM, using iso to upgrade - same failure

    4) Upgraded an older VM of my installation in Hyper-V - hooray - upgraded

    5) Tried to natively boot that VM creating boot entry - it would not boot

    6) Running out of ideas - so I thought maybe my current installation is corrupted. Did a repair upgrade expecting it to fail as well, but that worked. Then I tried (2) above again and HOORAY - I was upgraded.

It kept nearly all my settings, did not reinstall any junk.

After bit of testing, it looked fine until I tried to use gamebar recording. I pressed win+G and it came up with a popup sating I needed a Store app for MS-GamingOverlay. I looked in Store and NADA, ZILCH, NOT A SAUSAGE.

Googled loads - everything said disable this by turning off switch to record clips. No good for me as I wanted to record!

Then I remembered I had use powershell to delete some XBOX apps - one was XBOX Gaming Overlay. I added 2+2 and thought maybe that was the reason. Again hunted again how to reinstate it but could not find anything obvious.

In the end, I decided to use brute force and ran

    Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers| Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.Inst
    allLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

to reinstate everything (not things uninstalled like Candy Crush as it happens).

This did the trick and game bar recording now works again :-D.

    So

    1) If you are having problems upgrading, try a full OS system repair first.

    2) DO NOT DELETE XBOX APPS if you want game bar to work.

I have now fully backed up current installation with Reflect.
