I totally agree! They proved that with their forced updates. The average user doesn't know how and shouldn't be made to fix a problem caused by a forced update. The least MS could do is make it easy to stop Windows from trying to install a update that is known to cause the user a problem.
IMHO we can partially blame ourselves. A large number of Insiders including the Skippy ring get to anxious for a new build. It comes down to MS being damned if they do and damned if they don't. I do have a problem with MS sending out forced updates to the general users that causes their computers to be unusable.
So far I've only encountered two problems. the first was the problem with Macrium Reflect which was fixed by Macrium. The second is with external HDDs. With all of my external HDDs I had to go into Disk Management and assign them a drive letter before I could see them in file explorer. My USB flash were OK.
Hi there
MR for this build -- Thanks to staff at MR for fixing it - but it runs really slow restoring on skippy (the bootable version) compared with restoring a normal build (with approx. the same number of applications etc installed on Windows).
14 Mins for the normal version and 49 mins for the skippy version -- note don't run the skippy version to restore a non skippy build - it will fail. Restore to SSD in both cases from the same external USB3 HDD.
DD from Linux 32 mins -- and DD while it works 100% on anything it is recognized to be slow and only used as a last resort to copy entire disks -- OK though for partitions. DD shouldn't be quicker than MR
I'm sure next skippy will fix the file system and MR will update their product too.
Otherwise skippy for me seems OK.
Have no problem with encountering the odd bug in these releases -- they are even I suppose pre-alpha software and one uses AYOR (although I have seen a poster or two on these threads say they actually use it on production systems -- I have to hope he doesn't work at my bank or airlines I often use !!!).
However that shouldn't preclude the base functionality of the OS from working properly -- e.g boot, security, and backup/restore functions plus other applications delivered by Ms such as Office. Other than that 3rd party applications that continue working without change is always a bonus too -- if people have problems with bugs on these releases IMO they shouldn't use. That's why these are TEST releases - and it's good a lot of people do test - so a much more varied testing environment than can be done in Ms's development labs.
Cheers
