"updated my desktop today and so far no problems"
    .............................................................................................

Agreed! I read this column with amazement at the number of you who have problems updating Windows. I've been updating my two home-built desktops and two laptops (Samsung and Dell) for years without any problems. I simply use Windows update, no messing about with special downloads, and it works fine.

The only problem I ever have is why the updates? Seems like not much of my PCs need them.

Most of the time I don't see the purpose. I updated for the first time in months so I have access to the Mixed media portal. It's probably a good idea to sit on the "Semi-annual channel" (Non targeted) at least.

I always block the update server and image the system before any update.

Yes, seems a manual check will find and install it, but an automatic one won't. Another example of this here...

I know for example that a new update has been released (such as todays CU) and so I go and 'un-pause' updates. A message appears saying 'we are now checking for updates'. I now navigate to the main Windows Update screen and find that it actually says 'You're up to date' and the time of the check corresponds to the time I 'un-paused' the updates service.
Is this a bug with W10 Pro and pausing updates ? Solved - Windows 10 Forums

To investigate this I have left my test machine running 17134.228 continuously for the past three days. It has automatically checked at around 10am three times now, it still says it's up to date.

MS have said the only one with security fixes is the second Tuesday CU. They also said there could be these additional non-security preview updates in the third and/or fourth weeks.

    • At times referred to as our “B” release, Update Tuesday (most often referred to as Patch Tuesday) updates are published the second Tuesday of each month. These updates are the primary and most important of all the monthly update events and are the only regular releases that include new security fixes.
    • An out-of-band release is any update that does not follow the standard release schedule. These are reserved for situations where devices must be updated immediately either to fix security vulnerabilities or to solve a quality issues impacting many devices.
    • The “C” and “D” releases occur the third and fourth weeks of the month, respectively. These preview releases contain only non-security updates, and are intended to provide visibility and testing of the planned non-security fixes targeted for the next month’s Update Tuesday release. These updates are then shipped as part of the following month’s “B” or Update Tuesday release.

It wouldn't make sense to force an update/reboot on us nearly every week, that only makes sense for the 'Patch Tuesday' one. I know 'MS being sensible' seems a bit far fetched but it's the only interpretation that I can come up with.

Well... just upgraded to 1803 and then updated to build .254, all good it seems. Now, if Microsoft could fix the mkv files missing their thumbnails XD

Those that love to tweak and circumvent or delay updates seem to have many problems. I have 3 old Dell machines by today's standards, Dell Optiplex mini form factor x 2, Dell Inspiron laptop. I have never had any update or performance issues. MS doesn't like users deferring updates, they want one program out there so everyone is on the same page.

Sorry to bust yer bubble, Stitch, but those aren't the only ones having problems. A tad bit off topic, but today Skip Ahead Build 18234 dropped and many of us can no longer back up our systems, and Task Manager has wandered off into its own little world. Since we all installed today, I wouldn't say we'd circumvented or delayed the updates, yet . . .

If Microsoft doesn't want us to defer/delay updates, why then is it possible to do so? There are many and varied reasons why someone needs or wants to defer an update. Microsoft has made it possible for us to do so.

And . . . I don't see how it's possible to all be on the same page, since we have such diverse systems. Lots of folks have Dells and I wouldn't be caught dead with one; it's a matter of preference, rather than a judgment call. You've been lucky with your Dell computers; however, there are Dell owners who haven't been so lucky.

I have an HP Desktop, HP 17" Laptop and a Lenovo Flex 4 14". For the most part, all three have been flawless with updates, but there have been times I have wanted to chunk one or the other in the dirt!

Tweaking? Well, I don't, but Microsoft has made it possible for us who want to to tweak our systems to our liking. Yep, some folks have problems, but the problem isn't because they tweaked; more likely it's because they made a mistake in their tweaking.

Insider versions are beta versions - you are testing them for problems. Not to be used for real work. Ignore this at your peril.

You're preachin' to the choir, Bob! I never, never, never use a beta (which is what all Insider Builds are) for production work.
