I just read this article: Nvidia RTX 20 Series: Why You Should Jump Off The Hype Train

Not that I read forbes often, but I have to somewhat agree with the author here. Turing doesn't seem to be worth it, it's basically just hyping people over to a new-born technology (which looks really neat, don't get me wrong), but it won't get traction in the video game scene till 2-3 years, by then Volta is already out with new gen 7nm chips. Nvidia showed 20 games to support ray tracing, but they are scattered and are "planned" releases, which doesn't confirm much apart from the real showcases from SOTR and Exodus. Turing is basically Pascal with Tensor cores that can run RT better, that's it. Is it really worth it to buy a new card for a minimum of $500 just to get better performance running real-time lighting in a few games that you may or may not buy? Once I asked myself that question I'm leaning towards not buying a 2070, unless I can get one on sale that makes sense upgrading from a 1070. I'm not going to pay $750 for a RTX 2070 anytime soon, because that what it costs in my country, not $500...
I think the most reasonable action we can take is to just wait and see what the reviews of the card show, with and without Ray Tracing. There are a lot of things we just don't know. Our cards are not equipped for Ray Tracing. So, what happens if you try to play a game that uses Ray Tracing with one of our cards? I would guess that if you can't turn it off in the game, our cards would take a serious hit in performance. The are some reports I have seen from game developers that show with Ray Tracing, gamers tend to play the game a lot differently. They can look at reflections on cars and see someone sneaking around the corner or look at the reflection in the water and see a sniper on a rooftop. Those and some other things made them start playing the game differently. Ther's just too much we don't know right now to make that kind of decision unless you just want one and have the money to spend.

Upcoming and already released games that's becoming compatible will have the option to enable/disable it. Multiplayer modes won't feature it if users can take advantage of it, that would be silly if they did. As far as I know tensor cores are not required to run real-time tracing, but it will have a HUGE impact on performance without it because the whole purpose of tensor cores are to accelerate artificial throughput, so it will be interesting to see the benchmarks in September. I'm more interested to see the performance with it ON though seeing that each RTX card have different GR/s. Maybe the RTX 2070 can't maintain 60 frames per second with it enabled.

NVIDIA says the RTX 2080 GPU is twice as fast as the GTX 1080

Ok this sounds good. Games utilizing DLSS (Deep Learning Super-Sampling) from the Turing tensor cores will run games x2 (100%) faster, and games who don't will run x1.5 (50%) faster. A good margin over the assumptions. Still though, It's from Nvidia's hypetrain so it's better to wait and see real benchmarks. This also doesn't explain if enabling RT will have a major negative impact on performance on weaker GPUs in the series.

Addendum: I just found out the answer to my question… and it's not looking good for the performance on RT, at least not at the moment. Nvidia's Flagship RTX 2080 Ti Can't Hit 1080p 60FPS In New 'Tomb Raider' . Should be noted that it's uncertain this is with or without DLSS and any form of optimized drivers. But the game is out in a month (the game's gone gold) and if a 2080Ti can't do this properly even at 1080p then I'm not so sure a 2070 with 6 GR/s can maintain 60 either. Looks like RT will be a big hit even for the 20 series.

    Hi,
No version has ever been twice as fast as a prior version and I doubt this one will be
Possibly as stated twice as fast as a new feature like ray tracing but all is just hyper cool-aid for pre sells as far as I can see.
Can't go by anything nvidia says they just not seem to have dumped the junk single fan cooler founders edition for goodness sake lol

Their founders editions use two fans now, pluss a vapor chamber, so I'm not sure I understand what you mean? Obviously twice as fast is with DLSS, as I stated. 50% without will be tested in September if it's true or not. I can't test it because I will not pay $750 for one.

The RTX 2080Ti is a Titan V with added features. That 100% performance boost is not far from the full truth when all features are enabled/used in software.

I even think that the price point is a bargain really. Yes it's a steep price. I can't currently even afford a 1st gen Raspberry Pi, but if I had the money, I would have preordered 2 of these and an Nvlink bridge.

A lot of useful stuff one can do with such cards also outside of the gaming realm.

@essenbe Review can't be trusted blindly. Majority reviewers are well paid.

lol, the reviewers I'm waiting for, I can trust 100%. Pure numbers out of a big sample of tests and no opinions what so ever.

Yes, I am well aware. If you are a regular watcher you learn which one to pay attention to and which ones to take 'with a grain of salt'. One of the big things is when the reviewers all come up with different results. Then you start looking real close.

Perhaps in my post, I should have said "Reliable Reviews".
