I installed it yesterday via WU and so far I can't tell any difference.

The CU downloaded yesterday and I postponed restart until today, when I'd have a chance to watch it. Everything was fast and smooth until I clicked on the lock screen--then I got a black screen with an empty "personalized settings" box in the corner, and could hear a lot of disk and fan activity. The box stayed empty and the screen stayed black; the disk activity went on for 15 or 20 minutes, and then stopped. At that point I pressed the power button (as in "wake up!") which produced a blue screen and the message "shutting down." When I rebooted and got to the sign-in screen, it failed to recognize my password twice; third time worked and Windows came up as usual. Update history indicates today's updates were successfully installed, but no longer shows any prior updates; build is 17134.288.
The CU had downloaded and installed overnight on my husband's HP laptop, and he too found a black screen with an empty personalized settings box this morning. He got to a sign-in screen, but his PIN wasn't recognized and he shut down using CTRL-ALT-DEL. For some reason he had to reset his PIN when he rebooted. Then Windows came up normally and update history said the installation was successful.
Both systems were at build 17134.165 before this update.
All now seems well, although I think I'll check all my settings to make sure nothing was changed.

    "build is 17134.288"

    Don't you mean 17134.228?

The 'black screen with an empty "personalized settings" box in the corner' is often seen after an update, but should have only lasted for a minute or so before going to your desktop. Yours appears to have got stuck for some reason.
At that point I pressed the power button (as in "wake up!") which produced a blue screen and the message "shutting down."
It wasn't asleep, so shutting down is the correct response when you hit the power button. Shutting down like that before the 'personalized settings' had completed probably explains the loss of the update history.

It's probably OK now, but it may be worth running sfc /scannow as a precaution.

    @Eddie Doc, you're right, 17134.228. Oops!
@Bree, thanks for the explanation. I knew it was stuck while it was busy, but couldn't tell what was going on when the activity stopped. And I don't know what my husband did before getting his sign-in screen--I didn't get in there until I heard "blankety-blank machine" coming from his office--but might that also explain why the system failed to recognize his PIN?

Good suggestion about sfc /scannow, I'll do that. Thanks again.

I don't know if this is of interest to anyone but in relation to:

Addresses an issue that causes high CPU usage that results in performance degradation on some systems with Family 15h and 16h AMD processors. This issue occurs after installing the June 2018 or July 2018 Windows updates from Microsoft and the AMD microcode updates that address Spectre Variant 2 (CVE-2017-5715 – Branch Target Injection).

I have an AMD A4-9120 16h (HP Notebook) and had severe performance degradation started in June/July which suddenly and dramatically completely went away on Thursday when I installed this update. Particularly noticeable with very slow tabs and downloads in Firefox, which is generally most of what the computer is used for. Also typing in taskbar search field was VERY slow to show results, now instant again.

My experiences are documented in the following thread:

Inconsistent speedtest.net results (slow in Firefox and Chrome)

This bug is also present in FF Nightly on an AMD A10 9630p. Not using FF no more, security is too easy to break. Switch back to Opera dev or beta.

Present in the entire 1803 Insider cycle.
