Quicker method I've found when updating more than 1 machine - even with different hardware -- simply image ist machine that's successful and restore with Macrium to the other machine(s).

I had one computer that wouldn't update so I used the restore from another computer -- worked fine -- Windows on start after the restore spent a little time getting "Devices ready" (new hardware) and system booted and activated. Not sure is Ms would recommend this approach but it's by far the quickest when updating more than 1 machine --even with different hardware !!!!.

    Cheers

Thanks @jimbo45 , but that is not good enough for me. It's one thing to force things to work and work smoothly as possible and testing if things works as smooth as they are supposed to work. MS really needs to fix this annoyance, I see complaints all over the interwebs about WU issues (crashes, unresponsiveness, corruptions, error codes, BSODs, GSODs, slowness, lag etc...) WU simply does not work reliably anymore because they have overcomplicated it.

This update is quite troublesome. I usually get through any update without breaking my other installation in another drive (in GPT format... this insider is in MBR). But somehow, it managed to mess up the boot partition and took over the entire machine. Not a biggie for me. Image restoration on the other install fixed it. But still, not a smooth one this time.

    Hi folks
@slicendice and others regarding WU problems on this build 17735

Agree with previous posters - but I just wanted this wretched thing to work -- I had a problem with USB3 drives and VM's on VMWARE - this build fixed it so I wanted it on my other test machine - after 3 unsuccessful WU updates I just said "hang it" - I'll restore image from working machine --OK not the way to do it oficially and Ms must get the WU fixed. Sometimes though you just want the thing fixed and can't always wait for "The official Method" !!!!.

I'm an Engineer so I don't care WHY somethings bust -- that's up to the developers to fix. For me so long as I can get the thing working again safely !!! that's all I care about.

Note problem was with USB3 devices when running W10 HOST with various VM's with VMWARE workstation 14.1 -- I'm running the builds on real hardware but still want to run various VM's on these builds as host.

    Cheers

Yep, I DO often use MY preferred method to get things up and running as fast as possible and as reliably as possible, but currently most of the new features added to Windows are something I can not even test so I've decided to go back to basics and see if anything at all work reliably anymore.

Currently not a good sight at all!

I have had success making an ISO from Windows.old AFTER the reboot. Not sure if this would work 100% of the time (though it's never failed for me), but if you forgot to make an ISO before the reboot, give the files in Windows.old a try.

    Hi folks
I think it's mentioned in the tutorials but a repeat here.

If you want to make ISO's - certainly of build 17735 then you need to create the iso as per the tutorial after download has completed and before system restart. I think even after install the files might be gone after system has installed - but certainly grab it before any restart.

I have seen this behavior with this update. It did go through to successful installation, but I was getting a bit skeptical for a while there...

It's very unpredictable. It could actually be bouncing between downloading and getting ready. I've had that happen several times and it has gone on to successfully upgrade. It seems to get to downloading 100% or even installing and then say hey I've got something missing and go back to try it again.

I did an upgrade from 1803 17134.191 to 17730 and it bounced all over the place but eventually upgraded ok.
