I'm surprised Microsoft has so successfully made Windows work on almost every computer known to man or woman! I've even put it on some that are older'n dirt! Oh, wait, that's me, not the computers.
BTW, I have an AMD processor in this desktop and have had very few problems with Windows 10 throughout the Insider Program. The same goes for my HP AMD laptop and my 14" Lenovo Flex 4 Ideapad with an Intel processor.
Just making it work on many computer configs is not enough, making it work good and with variety of components and peripherals is a challenge. I used dozens of Linux distros and they all worked but how well is the problem. On most of them are various problems with sound, video and network, mostly WiFi.
I would not compare Linux and Windows at all. They are from 2 completely different worlds. Biggest difference is lack of hardware vendor driver support. Most drivers in Linux has been reverse engineered in order to at least get the basics working. Later some devices has vendor support for Linux and those devices run exceptionally well on any Linux distribution.
They just hail from different families and target users. Linux from from Unix, professional OS for highly professional users and programmers which Linus Thorvald tried to tame it enough for ordinary users. Gates&co. were primarily concerned with "Other folks" not requiring high skills just to run a PC.
