Even if I disable active monitoring it ccleaner enables it after reboot. That pisses me of big time!
After being a a ccleaner user for years I uninstalled it today.
Have to look for alternatives.

I used CCleaner waaay back when it was almost a necessity. Now my hardware and Windows does most of the cleaning automatically and I can hardly see the point of using this tool. After this debacle I definitely won't be using it, or recommend it.
Thanks for the input. I usually used ccleaner sparsely anyhow so if I feel I have to clean my machine maybe I install a previous version.
Two reasons I still use it.
- Windows own tools won't clean the temporary internet files for any 3rd-party browser, such as Firefox or Chrome.
- Windows own tools don't allow you to select which cookies to delete in Edge or IE - you can only choose all or none. CCleaner can whitelist those you want Edge/IE to keep.
Removed Ccleaner for each system, still use Avast Free here so far on all the systems, smart choice, not sure, but always trusted Avast over the years, but possibly by release of WIndows 10 1809 it might be gone from all the systems at that point. Just use Windows 10 Disk clean up now, and manual cleaning of folders, and browser caches
Used Avast Free Since 2006, so not switching fast to Defender as yet, but I know there both owned by Same Company, but so far staying with Avast Free at this point

I find it strange that you trust Avast and not CCleaner, same company now.
I feel comfortable using CCleaner, it's the most effective cleaner out there. The OP link about the anger over CCleaner is from CNet to me that's like the pan calling the kettle black.
Personally I think it's nothing more than a smear campaign against the best PC cleaner available. I don't understand the anger about CCleaner's active monitoring, it can be either enabled/disabled by users, nobody collects more active monitoring than MS.
MS know what time you get up/go to bed, when your system is idle or ON Line, where you've been and what trips you are planning for vacation, Hotels, Restaurants...
