So Ifinally installed KB4340917 after restoring Windows 10 to build 17134.112. Windows Update downloaded and installed 17134.191 successfully this time. Fortunately, I was able to just move programs folders from "C:\Windows.old\Program Files(x86)" and "C:\Windows.old\Program Files" to the proper new locations, and all the shortcuts still worked. Some applications still require reinstallation in order to re-register associations, but it's a minor hassle. I had luck this time, I learnt the lesson and will start doing periodic backups of system partition. Thank you guys for all the help.

Good to know and good to see that going backward was the solution. Backup!

    All the best,

Just wondering if I'm missing something here. This update, KB4340917, and another one a couple of weeks back, only showed up after I did a manual check for updates on Windows Update. WU doesn't show it following an automatic check.

If Microsoft has an update for your machine, shouldn't it show up regardless of how WU is checked? I fail to follow Microsoft's thinking.

^^^^ Now that there is a a correct action. I will do a a system image backup (MR Style) after I've proven to my self that this current CU is operating correctly, I then create a new image. If I don't have a relatively current image, I will create one before installing the CU. I really don't have very many issues with MS CU's, only once did it fail and that required an image restore. With as bad as the MS CU's have been over the last few years, I couldn't live without some sort of image backup.
Amongst all the tasks one is accomplishing everyday on his/her computer, the most essential and important one is a backup. Some users unfortunately still take backing up their machines very lightly until one day they realize how important, this simple innocuous task can be a lifesaver.

The best thing is to have a plan about how to back up your system. I still swear by the 3-2-1 off-and-away strategy. Here is a good article talking about just that:

See post 67. Set Defer feature updates for zero and the update should appear. This is another MS bug since this update isn't a feature update.

Upgraded to 1803 back in May - caused my system to freeze so I reverted back to 1709 and tried to stay safe as long as I could - Yesterday I got two updates with no info - found out they had something to do with notifications to upgrade versions below 1709 - went for a walk and when I got back the big white panel on my screen read READY TO UPGRADE - no choice - just had to do it - took about an hour

So now I am caught up with the rest of you at Windows 10 Home v1803 Build 17134.191 - So far so good - I've not run into any issues - Whew! It's scary each time they update or especially upgrade - it really shouldn't be this scary of an ordeal to update - wish they would leave well enough alone.

    Running 1709 isn't a drama, well....until 1909 anyway.
