I'd be perfectly happy with the snipping tool only supporting Bitmaps. As long as it captures something. Well for those freehand cutouts BMP would not work, but PNG works just fine since it adds transparency outside of the selected non-squared area.
I've used Snipping tool so much, I didn't even realize it had options to save in JPG and GIF formats. The Screen Sketch app should also be able to save in the same alterative formats. Maybe that will happen down the road??? I have used it in PNG and have no problem with that but I understand that the alternatives would be better. The new iteration of JPG that is in the works would be even better since it allegedly compresses more and decompresses without a loss of resolution.

slicendice -- One other thing for benefit of those who may not know -- Screen Sketch should work similar to Snipping Tool in this respect: After selecting the area to be clipped as an image, simply r-click inside that area and choose Copy; then you can even close the Tool (clicking 'No' to not save the clip). Then open Paint, click Paste button, and save to your choice of common formats. Later!

It's a holiday week here in U.S. of A. MS working with a skeleton crew. Maybe that explains the rattling noise from my HDD...Hmmmmmm
