This update did not go so well.
My notification center keep saying a restart is scheduled, but I restarted 3 times already ?

Yep I have the same but at least the pc is starting and usable which is a relief, now running version 1830 (OS build 17134.112)

This fixed it for me.
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\RegisteredApplications
Backup the key first and delete one by one until it stops crashing.
Thank you!! that finally worked, now the "set defaults by app" does not crash anymore!!! it was some old apps lurking there and I filtered the ones I need the least, leaving only the essentials, editing and importing the reg file and finally it stopped crashing. So some apps you have remaining are incompatible and need to be removed from that key(not from the computer)

Did you identify a particular key/app that caused it for you?

these are the ones I removed that finally succeeded
"SevenZipFolder"="SOFTWARE\\zabkat\\SevenZipFolder\\Capabilities"
"ImgBurn"="SOFTWARE\\ImgBurn\\Capabilities"
"Nero ControlCenter"="SOFTWARE\\Nero\\Nero 11\\Nero ControlCenter\\Capabilities"
"Nero Burning ROM"="SOFTWARE\\Nero\\Nero 16\\Nero Burning ROM\\Capabilities"
"Nero Express"="SOFTWARE\\Nero\\Nero 16\\Nero Express\\Capabilities"
"PhotoManager"="SOFTWARE\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\PhotoManager\\Capabilities"
"Windows Search"="Software\\Microsoft\\Windows Search\\Capabilities"
"Windows Disc Image Burner"="Software\\Microsoft\\IsoBurn\\Capabilities"
"Windows Address Book"="Software\\Clients\\Contacts\\Address Book\\Capabilities"
"iTunes"="Software\\Clients\\Media\\iTunes\\Capabilities"
mind you this system is first installed in 2008 in vista days, so there had to be many junk lurking, finally everything up to the last nail in the OS works fine.

Glad you got it fixed. I would just be a little concerned that removing these keys might cause a future issue (if it causes none now) on an update/feature update. I don't know enough to really say. I'm always wary about removing registry entries for installed apps. Anyway, for me the fix was easy since it was one app and I found it early by accident since I had just installed it and I can uninstall it and use a portable version for now. Which I do since I don't like "set defaults by app" not working like that.

Windows Update downloaded the update overnight. It installed successfully after restart in 25 minutes or so on my Lenovo laptop this afternoon; it also installed successfully, presumably during inactive hours, on my husband's HP laptop. So far everything seems to be working as it should.

Of course, as always, it's best to know what you are doing. I'm sure no ill effects will come from disabling capabilities for said unneeded apps. There used to be an issue with DISM restorehealth command after some insider previews releases, simply removing the concerned registry key regarding testsigning or whatever, cured the issue instantly

The weird thing is that Windows 10 did not care about those invalid entries until they got rid of the classic set apps in RS4 for the crippled limited modern settings version.

yeah, typical ms- quite buggy under the hood. Although you could use a third party app for that called filetypesman

Okay what gives? Today's updates worked okay but now when using File Explorer when I click on "New Folder" it crates " New shortcutFolder" and that ain't a folder. What is goin g on with Microsoft? A bunch of jokesters or software engineers? Really getting tired of MS updates.
