Please see my post #26 above - where I say "the mandatory restart was a lot slower", I actually got a black screen for about 2 minutes when it should have been booting. Then, it finished the boot process and has been OK since.
I can not update Windows 10 because the PC shows the black screen with the blue circling dot for days.
So I cannot enter Windows 10 because the first screen is not coming up with time, date and entering password for local user.

I do not expect the PC will be updated automatically, because just a part of Windows is booted from the HD c:\.

Do you say just power on and wait ?
I do not have this fix update installed.
What do I have to do ?
    Can you provide advice?

The reason is I do not expect anything to happen, when I power-on the PC.
I expect the just the black screen with circling blue mouse pointer.

So I suspect I have to initiate something with bootable USB Windows recovery stick in Windows mode and select a recovery option or do something in Command Prompt mode via the USB Windows Recovery stick.
The stick is prepared by the most recent version of Windows Media Creator.

    Thanks for suggestions/advice.

Wow the references for those new registry settings for enabling the new Spectre & Meltdown variants don't make sense and are confusing at my first read. Setting a mask of 3 with a setting of 8 ??? Some bits enable a variant fix, some disable. I am not clear what the various combos of bits will actually do. They should make a table.

What issues are they? I ask because since I updated to 1803, I've had no networking issues at all. I'd just like to know what to look out for.
Mine (on 2 pc's) keep getting reset for what reason I can't determine. Maybe it's Windows fault, maybe it's mine, but i like to blame them....really not fair I guess.

Just turned my machine on for the first time today and went over to check for updates and was greeted by "Restart now" Rebooted twice, once at 35% and the last one at 96%?
